Axe insanity

There's a TT Flint Edge DB cruiser on eBay that has a bid of $192.50. It's a nice looking axe, but holy crap. It's the most common vintage cruiser out there. What's the world coming to?

Somebody might have been pricing out new Swedish 'boutique' axes and wisely thought to bid price-wise on something he/she thought would be better?

I just bid on a TT Flint Edge DB that eventually went for 27 bucks. I guessing hanging the head is getting a premium nowadays. I wound up winning a Plumb Cruiser for 26. What do you think was the better way to go TT or Plumb?

Vintage True Temper and Plumb axes are both excellent tools. You can't go wrong with either.

Thanks, that was my thought but I like to avail myself of the wisdom of this group. Double bits are just astronomically expensive comparatively. I think though with this Plumb it is probably worth the price.

My first double bit was a plumb. I inherited it from my grandfather. I love that axe. I'd hate to part with any of my Flint Edge axes though. My first axe purchase was a Flint Edge cruiser I found in a pawn shop in Missoula, Mt. I also have a full sized 3.5 lb Flint Edge DB which is kind of my go to axe when any chopping needs to be done. I'm working on a Flint Edge Connecticut pattern right now. It's getting a curved octagonal haft.

I haven't posted here in a while, but I've been reading from time to time and hearing about the crazy online prices of certain patterns. I found it all hard to believe. I listed a cruiser last week on the bay that just closed for over $300. Couldn't friggen believe it. I don't know what I'd expect from a $300 axe, but apparently the prices are real.

Tell me it was a rare hard to find fancy etching, in mint type shape.

CB-R That is insanity(at least to me). I really hope it all continues though. It could benefit me at some point(you are already reaping the rewards). I really need to sell some on the bay. I worry a little about that because I have never sold anything there. Concerned that buyers would be hesitant to bid. I have an account I but have just used it to buy.

I feel another picking trip is going to happen soon.

bbforester, I really like the paint, about as good as it gets for rust protection. I am surprised that its not more popular. I don't mind it on hafts either, I know some say it causes blisters(along with varnish), but I havn't had a blister from a wooden handle since puberty.
Beautiful axe my friend.

To be clear the insanity seems to be for cruisers ... 2.5lb double bits. I often see regular DBs incorrectly listed as cruisers - description says they are 3.5lbs or you can see that the eye is much too long to be a cruiser, or they are on a 36inch handle, etc. I suppose that could be on purpose to get views, I dunno. Anyway, the Plumb is going to be an excellent purchase, no worries there at all.

Sold this one on the 'bay last week. Didn't think it'd sell, but a guy hit the $85 BIN 4 hours after I listed it. Only Black King I've seen with the embossing, but the head's a long way from mint condition (poll wear and bit oversharpening by previous owner)

Highly unlikely the bidder was actually planning to use this! But plenty pretty for hanging on the wall of a den and not too rash cost-wise either.

Look at the prices of vintage jeans... 8000 bucks for used pants. Hahaha :)

Damn I have to keep editing my post as I find more ridiculous prices online. A pair of 1890 jeans sold for 36000 dollars.

Haha well... I used it a bit after I refurb'd it about 4-5 months ago. It had a short handle on it (that I customized) but still enough power to easily split wood. The bevel was too fat for felling. As far as the price, I honestly didn't think there'd be much interest in an abused, little-known axe.

I saw that listing, showed it to my wife cause I couldn't believe people are paying that much...wish I had one to sell.
