Axe Modification - Does this make sense?

Gransfors Bruks Small Forrest Axe - I tend to over swing now and again - as my technique is getting better, and I remember my grandfather simply wrapped tape around the handle to protect against this.

I found that Mountain Bike inter tube fits this perfectly. I think it makes sense. Thoughts?

me thinks a heavy wrap of wet rawhide cord would be better.....cant see innertube protecting that well against overstrikes.....

Definatly seems like it would solve the problem, depending on the thickness of the tube of course. Good thought

I think you are right about protecting better with leather - but I wanted light weight and replaceable easily.

I think the inner tube idea has some merit. More positive grip when choking up on the axe for finer work. You could easily cut some thick belt leather and hold it in place with the inner tube to add a little cush and absorb some of the impact. Just the rubber may be too thin but might protect the handle from some scratches. You may be on to something. I hate trashing up my axes there. I got to thinking about a rawhide rope I have that had been chewed up some. Could do a wrap with something like that. Maybe a dog chewbone. Wet it and sew it around that area and let it shrink tight. I'm sure you will think of something. I have always admired your work. What about a turkish knot type of weave? Regards

I used to put rubber O rings in the same place on my hammers when I worked at a coal mine !

I did this to my S&N last night because if I bust a hunk of wood off the handle I'm going to be :grumpy:. I thought of rawhide but don't have any so I wrapped the handle with leather lacing then got the idea of using inner tube recently. I pulled the tubing right up over the leather. Not sure I'll leave it like that forever and hope I don't find out if it works or not.

I think it was your thread about getting cheap(free!) holey toobing from cycle shops. If so, thanks. I went right down to EMS and cleaned 'em out.

Something I make myself do to avoid mis-hits/cuts/ saw accidents is to check my own condition when I check my edge tools or refuel my chainsaw. I make sure I'm not exceedingly tired and needing to quit for the day, hungry, thirsty, or in need of a small break. I try to be mindful of my focus on the task and on the location of my cutting edge..... if my focus is sharp or diminished as I've become tired... AND, if I'm becoming a bit reckless ... taking risks I wouldn't normally take. Hope this makes sense. I like to quit while I'm ahead and go home whole and uninjured. In short, I try to avoid working stupid and avoid working tired. So far, so good. :)

I would just stop missing....but thats just me.:p

That looks like a good idea. You can, as was posted above use leather wrap or even paracord and then cover it with the inner tube. You can also use a longer piece of tube and then double it or even triple it over for thick protection.

I think it`s a great idea ! I think Marcelo had the ticket when he said triple layer it then you don`t have to worry about an overstrike denting and gouging the handle.

Great idea..... I also think you should put cork on the end of your knife and wear chainmail while whittling. Technique is everything. Aside from splitting mauls, you don't see too many collars on axes where they are used often.

i thought about wrapping some kevlar fabric from an airbag around the shaft and gluing it down with epoxy.

I'm thinking the inner tube would give massive blisters when choking up for an extended period of time so I wouldn't try it. I think you'll find you won't need it after you've gotten used to using an axe for a while, so it's probably a good idea if you don't want to scuff it while learning. But I like battle scars on my cutting tools, gives it character!

550 p-cord wrap, life's good.

I need to re-handle my hatchet, Siguy sure inspired me.

Rick,

Think of it as training wheels - I need to protect it while I learn to use this little thing. I am used to a large axe and it has be thrown all off...

Oh - and your an ass.

wont do much other than waste a tube, ive tried just about everything on my hammer for work and the only thing more cost effective buying a new hammer every 6 months that wont add tons of weight is a solid paracord wrap

Eliteist snob ;)

When we were heating our home with wood, I was splitting quite regularly and chopping about twice a season. Since we got a pellet stove, my axes have been relegated to camping tools. I am out of practice. Also I got real used to a full size head on a 28" handle. That ax is being held hostage at another home right now so I moved over to a full size handle on a double bit. What did I do first time I used it? I over swung, then I under swung. I had to really focus until I got used to it. Moral of the story? I'm not an uber-jack like Rick who is so perfect he poops fatwood. :D

Could you consider that "shatwood", then?

lol...

TF expects the initial assworthy answer from me.... its kinda our thing.

Now in all seriousness... I would think the multiple layered innertube to be the best choice. Mainly because of the many other uses it serves. 3-4 layers would do it.

TF, I'm not sure why you want it easily removable?
