Axe or hawk carry methods

Love that shoulder holster Ed!

You know, I've been thinking about those little Winkler axes. With my concealed carry permit, they are legal for me to carry. . .

Pair it with one of the shorter (15" OAL) HI kukri (which are classified as a knife, and I don't have to carry it concealed). . .

I bet a mugger would crap himself if someone went all Last of the Mohicans on him, eh?

Ed my prayers are with you my friend!!

Love that shoulder rig!

Corp...miscreants crap when faced with a naked kukri. That I can say from experience.

Thanks Edwood, that is very informative. What is the speed like on a draw like that?

Its pretty fast, once you take it out of the sheath my left hand goes up to cover my head, I duck down a little and depending on the situation I target the legs or crotch area :). If more space is available, I go for a head shot targeting the jaw area, a the same time moving to the side.

edwood, everytime you post a picture of your winkler gear, it pushes me a little closer to the edge of buying some. Great looking stuff man!

be safe.

Here is a shot of a leather shoulder rig made for a VTAC. Very comfortable lays under left arm.

I've only had one experience of drawing a kukri on someone. I suspect the guy was a meth cooker. I was in the woods, just kind of scouting around and seeing what was about. This guy start hollering off to my left about what was I doing there and such. He come trotting over with one of those Rambo II knives in his hand twirling it like that gay guy in the chain mail in the movie Commando. So I turn "with my 20" CAK in hand" and just say "hunting". Man, no kidding, he comes to a screeching halt and starts stuttering and stammering.

"W..w..ww..what do ya use th.th.th.that f.f.for?"

"Hunting"

"W..ww.w..what do you h.h..h.hunt with a kn.kn..knife l..like that?"

"Everything." (couldn't resist :p )

"L..l..ooks old."

"Only a couple of years, I just use it a lot. Nothing tears through a hog's ribcage and severs it's spine quite like it."

"Y..yy...yyeah I bet. I.I..I..I'm jj.j.just camping olver there. Gotta be careful, there's weird people out here sometimes."

"Thanks, I think I scared them away, though."

"Yeah. Yeah, man. Have a good time hunting." He trots back over the little knoll looking back every few steps to see if I was following.

Hehe. I'm a bad boy some days.

I pull my jacket back whit my left hand and grab the bungee, then pull it up and let it go. This now makes the hawk go free from the sheath, the head pivots out of the sheath cutting edge firs and spike last. As you’re tacking the hawk out whit your right hand you can do an upward strike it you get the chance.

That's a great draw technique.
I've seen video of Gurkhas practicing a similar draw/strike motion using with their belt mounted khukuris, saves a lot of time entering the fray.
I play kung fu with lots of weapons, and I like hawks for a number of reasons.
They are a great extension of the arm, multi edged, and unconventional in appearance, giving them a real "cool factor."
I've got an Emerson CQC-T for a tactical hawk, and a Benchmade Killian Hawk for breaking things.
I need to get some sort of quick release sheath for the CQC-7.
I need a better sheath for the Benchmade, too.
All of the sheaths have sucked on the hawks that I have purchased so far.
That full tang Winkler Hawk is amazing.
It would make a great hiking companion, hmmm....

When working in wood I like to carry my CS Trail Hawk on an ordinary ring for carrying a Maglite Flashlight. Works good, easy to get it and really cheap to get...

But not as cheap as the rope which Ookami uses...

Kind regards

I carry my hawk like you do in the first pic only on my left in about the 8 o'clock position. My gb mini I sometimes put in my pocket in between use. :D On a side note. What type of belt you got on in that first pic. I don't like the buckle on the wilderness belt.

That's why I read here. Great idea, I'm going to get one.

I sure wish the CC laws here in Washington state were better. I can carry my Glock .40 with a stack of spare clips. I can carry a concealed ar pistol if I feel like it.

But, if I get caught with a fixed blade concealed, the permit does no good!!!!!

The can charge with carrying a concealed weapon, and the permit covers only the gun!!!!!

When I carry a small FB I keep the handle exposed, peeking out of the top of my pocket, just to comply.

I would love to carry bigger and more nasty fixed blades concealed for sure!

... You know with all these pics of fancy set ups, I can't help but grin about the $5 hammer loop that mine rides in when I'm out. Literally, a $5 hammer loop from Ace hanging on a old web belt, then again I don't have to worry about a pine tree attacking me.

Impressive! I'm always amazed to see how pristine Ed keeps his weapons. I have carried a gun nearly everyday for more than twenty five years. I pride myself on taking care of my tools but I have to bow down to Ed for being to keep his like new.

My CS trench hawk fits behind the side pocket of my Alice pack, I also have a cord wrapped hammer carrier that fits it.
