Axe Recommendation's For Bugout Bag

Have you considered a vintage half hatchet? Since it's going in a bug out bag I'm sure size is a factor. Plus an actual hammer pole might come in handy. I know my vintage plumb one holds a great edge.

I do not have a bug out bag but if I did- I would look hard at a Fiskars. I use them and they do decent work with light weight.

I have always had an axe in back of my vehicle. A fire axe on 32" handle is part of the rotation.

Good suggestions.

Fiskars is the lightweight champ. Good solid hatchet. Half hatchet, riggers hatchet or claw hatchet are good choices, too. Vintage convex cheek hatchet is hard to beat though. It won this battle a century ago.

My choice? Claw hatchet. Chopper, hammer, prying tool.

This will be dependent on too many things to give you a good answer. Ask yourself these questions:

In regard to self defense, do you have the intestinal fortitude to see the damage an axe will do to another human? That's some twisted stuff, I promise. Short answer, get a gun if you can. It's over faster, less time to consider the emotional toll it will take on you, and less like to take that toll, because it will be less gruesome. Furthermore, if you're seriously considering this, get training. When that's done, get more training. a 5'-6' staff would be better for self defense over all, IMO.

The above bears restating, that said, unless you're intending to build a cabin, pick a hatchet that can stand duty as a hammer and that you feel comfortable swinging one handed. I like my Fiskars though it doesn't make the best hammer. A lightweight spike tomahawk can be a very effective weapon but is a bit less so as a tool. Taking a few minutes to use your hatchet to make yourself a staff with a pointed end might be a better use for your chopper. Also, staff and short stick training is easier to come by than 'hawk fighting classes. Jodo and Escrima training is available in most cities if you look for it.

I have used a carpenters hatchet while camping and it works OK. For a BOB/survival hatchet; a hardened poll, a tomahawk eye, and a curved edge.

axe: Husqavarna-Hults bruks boys axe. theyre 26 inches and an awesome all around woods tool. I love mine. it fells small trees no problem but hold a fine enough edge for carving

tomahawk: cold steel pipe hawk. doesn't split so great but swings like a framing hammer. pretty badass tool for cheap money. good kindling maker. I rounded off the hammer(pipe) end on mine to give it the swinging range of an actual hammer.

Hey Everyone, This Is Gonna Be My First Post On Here & It'll Be A Question For Y'all, What Is A Excellent Heavy Duty Axe/Hatchet/Tomahawk For My Bugout Bag. I Will Use It For Wood Processing & If Needed As A Weapon. Price Range Is Under $100. Thank's!!!

My go-to out of my collection is my custom H&B Spike. IIRC it cost me about $65.

This is the one I'll take with me when civilization collapses.

Cold Steel pipe hawk. It has a hammer poll, good blade, great weight, throws well, creates sparks off the top once you remove the coating, and the handle can be replaced in field. You can also take it off the handle and re-haft as a make shift adze.
