Axe recommendations

My experience is also that the thin edge is great for limbing, or other tasks in which you can sweep through with one stroke, but doesn't do as well at chopping through stuff where you're cutting notches in, as the thin profile doesn't throw chips out of the cut as well.

So my preference is the Wetterlings over the GB, as I do more chopping than limbing.

Same for me. I only use an axe for chopping. I do have hatchets but never use them as I prefer a large blade over a hatchet. When it comes to busting up firewood in the winter, a large axe is the way to go.

I use the big axe for nearly everything- but don't do a lot of backpacking. I have tried others but always come back to the hewing axe. It's just so nice to use and does most of the work by itself.

Best part was it cost $40 at an antique show, worst part is handles are hard to find- I use pick axe or double bit axe handles and fit round wedges into the open spaces.

Add my vote for the Oxhead line. By far, my favorite axe and I've been a hardened GB and Fiskars fan for a long time!

I love my mid sized Wetterlings..it chops and splits firewood just fine.
