Axe Steels?

Any tough enough steel...
Most are plain carbon steels with "low" carbon contents (0.40-0.75%...) - which steel technically classify as "high carbon steels" (compared to other stuff such as construction steel).
Tough tool steels...
Also depends on HT.
 
I recollect reading that RMJ uses 4130, which is regular carbon steel. Most anything in the 10-series should be ok too.
