Axe, Tomahawk & Hatchet Photo Thread

do those coats go on before the head is installed?
I would assume that the more oily moisture you get into the handle, the less evaporative water moisture you'll have problems with later... hm.

I only apply oils after hanging. I want the eye wood of the haft to be able to soak up my wood-swelling solution when I wedge it.

keep looking i love this thread

Guineaman being newish to Tactical Hawks can you please tell me what the top one on your photo post is?
Thank you

Two beauties hung / re-hung tonight.

Had this Stanley four square ready to go. Used a 24" Snow & Nealley handle (now in Smyrna???). Swel-locked and ready to be finished.

Also above it is a Plumb victory boy's axe from Operator's ebay sale. (I did my part to help him out. You should too)

Rehung it on the same handle with a wider wedge. Swel-locked and ready to be finished.

the two together (plumb in the foreground (right); Stanley on left):

Chris, I just want to thank you for saving all these old axes. So many of them could have wound up the scrap pile. Yet under the rust or pitting lies a piece of steel as good or better than anything made today. Good on you for saving them.

Much appreciated. I am sure you were amazed at my packing job as well lol.

More being put out there every week for probably at least 6 weeks or so.....

I am searching and can't find Operator on ebay, maybe it's because he doesnt have any active auctions?
NM, just gogled his name and it turned up. Going to keep my eyes on it. :)

Here's a couple I've put together recently. First is a little no-name cruiser. I think this one is hand forged. It has slight irregularities in it that just don't look factory to me. Great little axe with good steel. I had to re-profile the bits. Then I hung it on a Link cruiser handle with perfect grain.

The next one is a Collins Hudson Bay I picked up at an estate sale a few months back. This head came to me in almost pristine condition. Even came with a good solid handle. I cleaned it up a little and re-hung on the existing handle. Gave it a couple coats of BLO and Tung oil.

I've since sold both of these.
