Axe wrap?

Spurred on by some posts in a nearby thread I started to think about my use and accidental damage of axes. I've been using axes for a few years now and occasionally I have been guilty of a miss-strike or two. So I was thinking does anyone here put a protective wrap around their axe shaft at the head end?

I was thinking that if you wrapped 550 cord around maybe 3" of the shaft under the head then this could act as a shock absorber for any miss-strikes. It would also provide some spare cord in an emergency. Also you could use a 3'' leather sheath, possibly wet it, slide it up and let it dry out so it binds nice and tight?

Anyway anyone do or done this before?

Take a 2 1/2" section of bicycle innertube and and stretch it over the handle up to 1/2" of the head. Then take a 3" piece and slip it over the first. follow with a third if you want to.

Nice and clean and will not retain water to rot/rust

Some folks use tennis racket handle wrap for their hammer handles, kind of a thin rubber that might provide some protection. -Matt-

One Scout camp put pieces of mild steel 1/8" thick, 1/4" wide, and 4" long in place at the front of the handle under the head. These were tapped in place with various types of tape. These pieces of steel distributed the impact of mishits so that the handles were not damaged (Well, there was that one kid . . . .). Tape, cord (sash cord at the time), "tin" can steel, rubber, and leather did not prevent damage nearly as well, although all helped to some extent.

Experimental pool: 600-800 kids a week

(Wanna' know how long it took to make these pieces with a hacksaw? :o)

I have seen copper wire wrap around hawks and axes. Sometimes it is flattened out some with a hammer or filed flat. Has a nice look.
