Gransfor Bruks are kickin, and you can't go wrong with one. wetterling was bought by GB and the quality has improved. Husqvarna axes are also made by Wetterling. Hultafors is another brand that you can't go wrong with. Please keep the traditional design. The all metal Hatchets, esting, BRK, ect do not split as well because of the thin bit geometry.
Here are some pics of me splitting a log with my 19" wetterling. This is why I prefer the traditional design. the flat Axes take far more energy to do this.
Start on the top edge, in alignment with the grain.
Switch ends, same side.
Switch sides and pow, the log splits because of the geometry of the bit. I use a baton to do this. Don't swing it!!!!
Pic of my BK9 layed on top of the split log. Too large to batton with a knife!
The Husqvarna has the same geometry as GB. Here is a pic of same very seasoned, very hard wood I harvested for carving. Had no issues of edge rolling or chipping.
Here is a pic of the Wetterling mini next to the Husqvarna 12". You can see the difference in geometry.
Thanks for lookin, and hope this helps...
