Dimensions are the same as the regular 800 AFCK with the exception of the liners. Because of the Axis Lock, the dual liners have switched from titanium to 410 SS. There are a series of holes in the liners to reduce weight. The liners are a little thicker therefore making the handle a bit thicker overall than the regular 800.

A more in depth review to come at a later time.

I believe I also say that Benchmade was using D2 steel. Am I correct on this?

I just checked. D2 is here!!! Camillus is using it in their EDCs and ArcLites and now we have an AXIS AFCK in D2. Knives are SOOOO cool!

Very nice. The lock mechanism looks smaller than other Axis Locks that I have seen. I like that. With the use of D2 this should be a great knife. Now if I could just figure a way to live with Benchmade's business policies I I would purchase one of these knives in a minute.

Mitch - Benchmade hopes to start shipping these out sometime in November, as usual - brick and mortars will get theirs first followed by general distribution.

Crayola - D2 is correct. I read on another Axis AFCK thread here that Bt2 is the only finish option for this and NOT the satin finish that is on the proto :( Ah well, can't have it all!

Keith - the lock is the same size as that used on the bigger Axis Lock knives. The scan may make it look smaller, but trust me, its the same size as the one on the 940, 550, 730, 710, etc.

No indications yet if there will be a smaller AFCK with the Axis....

Also no indications on whether or not the liner lock version of the 800 will be axed from the line....though that is always a possibility that this will happen if sales of the Axis version go through the roof.

I am really disappointed in BT2 for this. Why ruin such a good knife? If you are going to force BT2 on us why not use M2 instead of D2? The only advatage I see in M2 over D2 is a little more corrosion resistance which is moot if you are going to use BT2. I would really like to see satin as an option. I hate BT2 so much that I am really debating on whether or not I want one now.

Dexter, did they ofer any reason for not offering a satin finish?

Guys,

Don't hang me for something that Benchmade is not going to do! :D They didn't give a reason why satin won't be offered. Like I said before, D2 doesn't need to be coated. Look at Bob Dozier's knives - all of them are D2 and they're all satin. I too am disappointed that BT2 is the only option but in the overall scheme of things, I'm happy that I finally will get an Axis AFCK (gotta look at the bright side). I'm going to try to find out why satin won't be offered....stay tuned...

Sorry Dexter. I didn't mean you in the previous post. When I said you I meant Benchmade.

Maybe it is easier for them to have the blade coated? Who knows. I am disappointed though. I wonder if I could get a blade before they coat it?

LOL :) Believe me, I feel the same way about the coated blades.

As far as easier for them to coat the blade, I'm not sure. Seems to be more difficulat as they probably have to send the blades off to a vendor to have the blades coated. You would think that hitting the blades on a Scotchbrite wheel in the factory would be a lot fast and probably less expensive  You might want to try asking them to see if they can satin a blade for you....never know without trying! Though, don't be calling up Benchmade and say "Dexter says you will....." :D

cant you just sand off the coating on the blade? it shouldnt be too hard to do...

It probably isn't. I just hate to pay that much $$$ for something and have to fix it before it even gets carried. Real shame it couldn't be "right" from the factory.

I'm going to call them tomorrow and say "Dexter told me that you would give me a satin blade!" ;)

Just kidding Dexter. I may ask though.

Dennis - LOL! OTOH, saying that may work for you ;) :p

Hey Dex,

Can you tell us anything more on this WONDERFUL knife? Did BM let you test it out or were you only allowed to drool on it? I'm wondering about how good they got the heat-treat. We know how good their M2 is and I'm guessing that they chose D2 because it may be even better.

John,

I am testing the knife out as well as drooling over it :D Planning on posting my findings to the Reviews forum a little later down the road. So far, the edge holding is very good. So far I'm happy with the way its going. So far my only gripe (like everyone else's) is that the knife will only be available in the BT2 coating  Oh well, can't have it all.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else with the BT2. Would it be possible to send the blade to another company to have it recoated? Thanks.

Yeah, their business policies could be better IMO, too. As it is, I have to give them all my money to get all their knives. I wish they would give them to me without that.

OK, OK, I know there are other things going on that I don't know about, but I just couldn't resist. Here Benchmade is taking what may be the best design they've ever had and upgrading it with the best steel I've run across (better than their M2, and much better than S60V), and putting in a lock that is about as close to foolproof as you can make it. And we complain (me included). Yeah, yeah, I'd like to have satin, too. But it's just too dang easy to remove BT2 to get all worked up about it. And I'm liking what I'm hearing about the liners. Steel, and thicker. I would hope that would clear up any flex problems that the old AFCK had. I can't wait to get my grubby hands on this knife!

My anticipation for this models availability has been gravely upset. Axis lock- a plus. Tip up carry- NEGATIVE. :( The original 800 is tip down. Why change it??? :( The pocket clip can be mounted near the pivot pin. It has been done on the pardue Axis 720 without problems. A real huge disappointment. :(

It's much easier to do with the 720. The 720 has aluminum handle scales, which can be tapped for mounting the clip on the pivot end. Different story with the G10 over steel.
