Axis lock broken?!

I was watching TV casually and I suddenly heard a 'pop' come from my mini grip! Since the blade was extended I pulled back on the bar and there is NO resistance.

I think one of the springs may have broken and it needs to take a trip to benchmade.

Any similar stories/problems?

Yeah, I've had two broken in the past. Instead of sending it in to Benchmade I opted to make new ones out of guitar string.

I've heard of it happening to others, and its the main reason I'm not a big fan of the Axis lock.

They'll take good care of you.

Interesting.... How did that work out?

They seem to work fine mechanically, though since those two experiences I've stopped buying Axis locks. It is a pain to shape the strings. On the plus side, if they ever break again I do have plenty of guitar string to make new ones.

Stop flipping your knives while watch TV. It's not a toy. I have had the same Ritter Griptilian for over 5 years plus several other Axis models all with never a problem probably because I don't flip my knives open while watching TV.

WOW..
Who pissed in your cherios.

Call benchmade. ask if they will send you new ones

Its and easy fix.

So what gauge string did you use? I assume it was an unwound string.

At least someone is enjoying their knife :)

I had a fear of this upon buying my first Benchmade. There is no doubt it sucks when they break but one thing I do like is the Axis lock is EASILY fixable. I believe more so than a liner or framelock.

There is more than one similar story/problem and they all have a common theme; "I was sitting there watching tv."

Maybe it's just an accident prone area in many houses! I have hurt myself more in my living room than in the kitchen.

...yeah, but how often does one break a liner or framelock just from opening and closing it?

Not as much as the Axis but when the Omega spring does break, it is easily fixable. When a liner or frame lock goes; not so much.

I feel, personally, that it's not realistic to imply that linerlocks and framelocks are even 1/100th as likely to just suddenly break upon normal opening or closing. It's just not even worth stating that it's "easier to fix" as what it's being compared to is so insanely unlikely to break in the same conditions. That's like saying "yeah, a cheap ballpoint pen might break from clicking it, but it's easier to fix than a fountain pen." While true, fountain pens don't operate the same way and are not prone to the same issues. It's comparing a low-chance occurrence with an almost unheard-of occurrence.
