Got Axle Roy finished. Had to resort to a water quench after trying oil first. The head is 5 1/4" with a 3 1/4" cutting edge. The handle is curly maple and around 11". Weight is 20oz. The two horse shoes were also in the foundation wall that I recovered the axle from.

Damn Raymond, you are a mix of artisan and machinist!
This ax and the hawk I saw before are beautiful pieces of craftsmanship and the lines on this ax are so crisp and clean it looks like a cnc milling machine cut it out! You must have amazing manual dexterity!!!

Nice, How did you stain and finish the maple?

I use leather dye to color the wood. Its a mix of brown and black. I'll totally saturate the wood and after it drys I'll sand it down real good with 320 paper. Its finished with 3 coats of tung oil. After I apply the oil I'll rub it in with my hand. It forces the oil inside much better than just applying it with a brush or dobber.

Once again your work is breathtaking. Very nicely done bro.
