SUGGESTION WITHDRAWNWith this recent talk about a possible reintroduction of the C-60 Massad Ayoob model I have been racking my brains trying to think of that one little improvement and/or modification that could make this classic Spyder much more appealing to a broader base of knife users.

This morning I was playing with a new Chinook III I just aquired and it hit like an 18 wheeler barreling down I-70 at 80mph  This handle geometry on the Chinook III would be so PERFECT. With that handle configuration and the Ayoob blade blade ergonomics this could be a super, heavy duty, Self Defense dream come true  .

This Chinook III, G-10 handle combined with the blade ergos of the Massad Ayoob would be one super EDC & SD knife extraordinaire. Just simply build the new Ayoob with the same style of handle that they used for the Chinook III. Also have the original pistol grip positioned blade of the C-60 engineered in one dynamic, heavy duty folder. The Grip factor would be increased and you would have the unique, pistol like positioning for blade configuration. You would in effect vastly improve the grip of the Ayoob as well as making it much more viable for SD use even in the first responder field which I am sure that Mr. Ayoob would probably appreciate. Think about this one people. A beefy, sure grip C-60. On top of that wouldn't it be a great candidate for another GOLDEN COLORADO Spyder.

Tell me why it wouldn't work if you don't think it would? Also who among you like this idea? Anything I overlooked maybe?SUGGESTION WITHDRAWN

This would be a cool blade. The only thing that would concern me is the Ayoob losing it's slimness in the pocket. I don't own a Chinook, but I would assume it is thicker? Correct me if I am wrong. It would be a much stronger lock though, but would the blade maintain its slimness and very fine tip as well or would it become a little thicker and stronger like the handle, with more of a slant towards utility?

I wonder if they could use the same profile handle as the Chinook, but with the slimness of the original Ayoob. One of my favorite things about the Ayoob is how it disappears in the pocket.

Keep thinking of these cool ideas. Hopefully we will see the C60 reemergence sooner than we think!

I am really amazed at the less than enthusiastic response I have gotten from this thread thus far  Obviously few people think that this is a good idea.

Say if I'm barking up the wrong tree I just wish you all would tell me where my thinking is wrong. Just a little over a month ago there was a mania of a response when they suggested a re-release of the C-60 Massad Ayoob. And how quickly this enthusiasm has died

One of the problems I have heard people tell me that are critical of the original Ayoob model was that the handle wasn't "GRIPPY" enough. I just thought that a ChINOOK handle or something along that line would be a nice remedy to the problem.

Maybe there is a happy medium?

JDS,
I like the idea of a G-10 handle for the Ayoob blade, however I think the Chinook handle would be too big & curvy for the narrow blade profile of the Ayoob. It would feel & move great, yes, however it would look a little out of place.

I think the general idea is good, but needs tweeking.

Personally, I prefer the handle shape of the C60 to the Chinook. My only problem with the original was my personal prejudice (reinforced every day by use) against metal handle scales. I simply don't like them, regardless of what metal they are.

I have knives with stainless steel handles. In fact, I am carrying a stainless D4 for a beater, to keep the ZDP off the concrete at work, as well as a Lava and a Spin. The D4 is the only one seeing any use, and I may not be able to stand it much longer. One more cut from a slip/fumble and it is gone.

I have a couple of knives with titanium handles. They gather dust. I never even pick them up any more, much less carry them.

I have knives with aluminum handle scales. They keep the titanium company.

I have a knife with a copper handle. I see it once in a while. For all I know, the blade may have rusted off by now.

Metal is fine for liners, but not for the part I hold. That is the only change that will make me buy a new version of the Ayoob: change the handle material to what the designer intended. The rest of it is fine.

I've been giving this one a bit of thought.

Personally, I think that the use of the Chinook handle will probably take away from the overall slimness of the Ayoob, which, while not a consideration for use, would definitely be one for carry. Although then again, having a huge butt end to hit someone with would be interesting.

I was thinking of suggesting an increase in the blade size if we were going to use the Chinook handle, but then I realised that it would be nothing more than a Chinook with a negative blade angle:o .

I'd love to see a rerelease but not a redesign. :D All I'd add to the original is a G-10 handle at the most. Otherwise, I like it as it is.

Well I guess this is just one of those times in life that I just got to fess up and admit that I made a mistake. The more I look at the well thought out responses that you guys/gals have all made have really made me re-think my position on the idea of a "Chinook" type handle for the C-60.

The one brother is right. That would in essence totally re-design the knife. The more I think about it that is not really what I would like to see either. I just goofed on that one :o

The one part of the suggestion that I will not back off from would be to have a handle scale with a better grip and I think that Peel Ply Carbon Fiber or G-10 would be apropos. My apologies to Massad Ayoob and to the people of the Spyder community. I really just kind of was taken in by the super grip of the Chinook and I didn't really take into account that we would be essentially making a totally new design.

I totally withdraw that suggestion. If you all want me to I will even delete the thread unless you want to use it to talk more about a new C-60 handle scale. OK I'll have my Crow now with A-1 sauce and I want it well done :oTHREAD CLOSED
