Thank-you for the contest! Decided to throw up some of the work on a couple of different notches I had been doing today with my EDC in some pretty damn hard wood.

My entry...
I have learned a bit from my past attempts at repurposing items as sheaths for my BK15; so I decided that my EDC should have an actual sheath. Since I'm not a skilled craftsman, it seemed reasonable to use an existing sheath. I considered some of the common choices, and here are the ones I liked the best.
Ballistic nylon

leather over wood (complete with carry strap!)

At first glance, these all look like good, workable options; but, if I'm being honest, I'd have to admit that the fit and retention are fairly poor. Worse, as proud as I was with my selections, every time I used one for its intended purpose - carrying my EDC - I found myself getting unusual looks (STARES) from just about everybody I encountered. Without exception, the experiences left me feeling awkard...and, somehow, inadequate.

I avoided scrutiny for a while, as I considered my next option.
While this doesn't count as a sheath, I found it very convenient; mostly because my EDC was always ready for use...but the looks turned hostile, and I felt more uncomfortable than before.

I think that carbon fiber looking thingie would suit my knife just fine. It looks great; and, having tried a few Azwelke sheaths, I'm confident the fit and retention are superb.

Curious if you know what kind of wood that is. Looks kind of like black birch or pin cherry but hard to tell from the bit of bark left.

I don't believe it was either of those two, bark was removed entirely and what you see there is all the inner bark, which has that brown hue to it. It had a thin bark, so I just peeled it off with the EDC. I can dig through the wood pile tomorrow to try to find some more of what we cut it from if you want however!

If not too much trouble, sure.

From your pic it looks like some of the bark was still there on the far left side of the dowel. Saw you were in Michigan (I'm Wisconsin) and looked most similar to the two I mentioned that I'm familiar with.

Always like learning new things, so I appreciate it.
