B13

I am going to write a hand written letter to Jerry about it, just like W-457 did. Somehow I feel like if we are asking for a special knife with personal touches custom for our group of chopper lovers, the least I can do is send the 13ossman a good old fashioned letter to ask for it. Don't get me wrong, email is modern, fast, efficient & convenient, but a letter just seems special, like someone cared enough to take time out of their day just for you.
If anyone else would like to do the same here is where to send your letter:
Jerry Busse
11651 Co. Rd. 12
Wauseon, OH 43567

I wonder if he takes bribes in bottle form...

Hey, 343 posts and we finally got 5 star rated! :D

Musta been the artwork. ;)

Haha, that satin came courtesy of a TG14 since it was saber and all. The blade and handle was W-457, that was the hard part, I just touched up his work, though I missed the yellow in the talon hole and tube fastener. You can certainly tell I don't do this for a living! :o

Not bad! It's been exactly one month and we've got 346 post (347 now) and 9,378 views

I really don't care about numbers. If there's one on it then it wont bother me, but I certainly don't need a special one ;)

I'd even be happy with combat grade to get this done, but it seems like a lot of folks want BIG or satin, so that's cool with me.

I like CG to strip too. Heck maybe we can get those numbered. I'd like gray handles but I doubt that would happen.

I'm kind of leaning towards CG to keep down the cost. Plus a sage blade with tan res-c (ETA: or a tanker blade with gray res-c) would be awesome
I will definitely take BIG or satin though.

Let's get the pessimistic realities noted for the record as challenging obstacles to overcome instead of just things we have working against us:
1. No prototype or concept ever mentioned by the Boss Hog, ever that I am aware of. I would love to be incorrect on this. :o We can change this, even if we have to drink, smoke our bribe our way to it at Blade. :D
2. Lack of focus/cohesion, we all have different ideas which is great, but we need to get down to one or two main concepts, work on a consensus and then squeal until the Bossman throws something in the trough for us. 30 piglets each begging for their own different trough filled will just starve, but 30 piggies squealing for one or two troughs filled side by each may have a chance. :p We can change this too.
3. It is going to be a long shot that may have to be approached as a custom group order if we can not get it made into an offering, though I suspect it would sell very well. Backup plans are ok, but achieving a goal/grail is so much more satisfying. ;)
4. A name for us and maybe the blade(s) that could work in our favor to make the marketing of this idea an easy sell for the Bossman. I hear it's easier to paint a masterpiece on a blank canvas so let's dip our snouts in colorful ideas and make it happen!

I have been thinking a lot about #4 as a decent place to start, so here we go.

You guys have already done a great job taking off with the B = 13 idea and run with it, so let's see if we can improve on it. Here's my thought process on this. The Boss does a great job supporting the military, the best stories I have heard from older Hogs have confirmed that. The ARMY has MOS's (Military Occupational Specialties, a really fancy acronym way of saying coded job title) and one of those is thirteen bravo in militarese written simply as 13B. That MOS is a field artillery cannon crew member the last I knew which is perfect... after all, we are seeking the heavy hitter big gun of respirene-c INFI choppers. This made me think of a nickname as the crew wishing to wield this res-c heavy hitter being along the lines of the Res-C Artillery. Then I kept thinking...

Now we should not disrespect the soldiers in that job by taking the thirteen bravo title they are proud of, but try to borrow from it and honor it. If we split the difference between B13 and 13B, we come up with 1B3 which looks funny typed, but makes an interesting logo that plays on the B = 13 idea well. Here is my hand drawn concept to run by my hog brethren for yea let's build on that or nay. Keep in mind that I sketched this on the back of a receipt delivering gas to a truck stop then fell asleep last night before I could photoshop a nicer version last night so the quality is not great. If done right it could still read B13 by seeing the B before the 13 wrapped around it. That said I give you my crude concept for a logo:

Since some of us just want a Basic 13 similar to the 1311, some of us want a Bolo 13 different from any other res-c release yet, and some like me would love to see both, I took it a step further. After all, Res-C Artillery implies plural heavy hitters. Here is an even more crude two step expansion of my sketch as I dream:

My first thought of a Bolo 13 which is technically a B13 too, but could be a 1B3 to avoid confusion

But that only covers one version of ideally two designs, so furthering the sketch again to cover both a B13 and a 1B3 in one logo the bolo part could be dropped to have just the basic

So what are your thoughts oinkers?
For the record, I was not in the artillery, I just operated trucks & construction equipment during (and after) my time as a soldier, but support from 13B's was very much appreciated by those in need of it.

Excellent work Tim, I'm on board as well. B13 all the way.

I think everyone involved deserves major props--that's just right.

Don't care which finish as long as it looks similar to this. Choil or not is ok.

My take on the choil is hopefully a logical one to everyone else:
1) Since it is so hard to get the 13ossman to do no choils having it done as pictured covers everyone and here is why, a choil can always be added to what is pictured, but it sure can't be taken out once there. ;)
Hopefully both can be made available, but if only one, that brings me to
2) Maximum edge and no snags is the most practical and useful for brush/machete type work and this may be the closest we can get to a machete even if a tad thicker and heavier than one, it will still do the task much better than something heavier or thicker yet.
3) For the guys who think sharpening would be an issue I can vouch from my experience with other blades shorter than this that sharpening a recurve this long and smooth won't be any harder that sharpening a 2" straight blade. After reading lots of stuff online about why one must have a choil for sharpening, I decided to test out the theories first hand and what I found is whether by hand, or using an edge pro with angled passes, or a slack belt sander or a padded 3m sanding disc on a drill press, all work very well on a zilla, mojo and even a sus scrofa.

I'll stray from the pack here a little and say that I like choils. Yeah you get that little extra bit of edge without a choil but it's a part I wouldn't ever use. On the other hand, I find myself using the base of the edge, right up against the choil, for small cutting tasks. It comes in quite handy. You can get a good grip with your finger in the choil and use that little edge for lots of different things. its almost like using the tip of the blade but with more control.

On the other hand, Tim is right. A choil can always be added. Never taken away. That's why even though I prefer a choil, my vote goes to choil-less.

Yup curved blades arent hard to sharpen at all. Especially if you keep the edge up with a ceramic rod for honing. That's also the beauty of INFI.

ETA:
This is also one of the few knives that I think looks better without a choil.

Should I change the title of the thread to Bolo 13?

If you did, you could go something along the lines of "B13 AKA Bolo 13" or "B13/Bolo13" so the B13 stays up front for easy recognition. The thread number will be the same no matter what the title changes to. Or you can just leave it alone, the view count is going up pretty quick, so our group efforts seem to be working. :D

Wait until Jerry gets my letter please! Ha the "B13" thread is key in my message. :D
LOL, If he does change it, hopefully as long as B13 is still in the title he should be good. I suspect Jerry has already seen this thread and is just watching things as they develop. He does seem to be pretty good at his job and very intelligent, so this may just be promising entertainment for now. Most business owners would give about anything to have customers get lined up for an idea to spend money on. :p

Going to bed... just thinking about the Bolo13 missing from the top of this picture.
