BABEL TOWER BUSH BASH, Linville Gorge

Concentration: Rock Formation Shelters.

When: Mar 20th -22nd

Where: Linville Gorge, NC

What: A short hike and camp out to Babel Tower, a wonderful spot in Linville Gorge

Distance from Road: 1.3 miles, moderate terrain.

What to bring: whatever you can on your back

Alcohol and Dogs allowed, but control both.

Babel Tower is one of my favorite spots in NC to camp, and last weekend I climbed in scouted the area. I think there are enough campsites for about 20 people, plus more if you get either friendly/ innovative. I will be hosting this bush trip. These campsites are first come first serve, so in the event that other backpackers or campers may be using one when we arrive, we can explore the many other options in that surrounding babel tower area (trust me there are lots)

FRIDAY: There are campsites all over the main dirt road along one side of the Gorge. We will park and car camp at the Babel Tower Head.

Saturday Morning:
9:30 AM- We head into the gorge to Babel Tower.

Leave whenever you want, Saturday or Sunday night.

Things to think about:
Natural Shelters abound in this area, so that is the “theme” of the trip. Don’t be afraid to bring along your tent or hammock. I will be bringing a light tarp and will be making use of these natural wonders.

More Details and directions to come.

I really love the theme, I'm very interested in rock formation shelters and have scouted out or slept in about 6 different spots in my playground, Harriman State Park.

Would love to make this trip but doubt I can :grumpy:

Joe this sounds very interesting, the pics look great, I'm waiting to hear more. What kind of temps do you get down there in March?

Hmm, that's an 8 hour drive for me. Although I'm boned that weekend anyway, the wife is going away and I have the kids to myself then!!!

Joe, I will see if I can make it, I was planning a trip earlier in the month, not sure I can break loose for 2 weekends in March. might cancel the earlier trip though.

:)! I've got three already!

Tim, bring the kids down, they shall have fun! You can borrow my three man tent!

Jim, you can start off from the top of the gorge weds and meet us on babel tower trail, that way you can get your miles in (I can't get off work earlier)

Weather? Who knows, it is NC. We will know more as the trends get closer
It could be ice, it could be 75 out.

Isn't this where portions of Last of the Mohicans was filmed...right?

Very cool place.

Maybe, butI don't remember LG - but there were many scenes filmed around Chimney Rock and also on private land in the Brevard area on property then owned by Dupont

BTTT

Its still on!!!

Can I get some replies on who can definitely make it?

Hey Jim, there is a guy on another forum, that I have packed with, that will be on spring break then. He might be able to meet you up there early if you guys want to get serious miles in before hand!

With all the threads lately about hiking and camping and getting outside, come out with us and share in your own woods romp.

This thing is still on.

SJdm, Howitz, and I are confirmed

Anyone else serious about coming, please PM me so we can exchange phone numbers.

Still waiting on confirmation from groh frog (hoodlums) among others.

From the intersection of I-40 & NC Hwy 226 Marion,NC 28752

0.7 mi

2. Continue on NC-226 Byp/US-221
Continue to follow US-221

26.2 mi

3.Turn right at NC-183
0.7 mi

*****4.Continue on County Line Rd/NC-1238/Old NC 105
(a tricky turn, it is right at the curve of 221 and is a dirt road, labeled by a Linville Gorge sign. Check it out on satellite on google maps.)
Destination will be on the left

Each large turn off will have a sign posted up with the trail heads name. Babel Tower is approximately the 5th "real" parking area coming in from 183. The Trail sign is on the right top corner of the parking lot.

If you hit Wiseman's view (assuming you came from the above directions) then you went to far.

I will be there no later than 10PM on Friday night. PM me so we can exchange cell phone numbers.

--------------------------------------------------
You should pack at least 64 ounces of water in. There is a muddy place to fill up on the trail, and we will hike down to the river as well. Purify the way you normally do. I get away with boiling water from Linville river for a long time.

Emphasis will be places on natural rock formation shelters all around babel tower, but you can bring a tent if you want!

So far, weather report says lows in the 30s, high in the 50s with sunny skies. That could change.

Please PM me if you are coming so we can exchange cell phone numbers
