Looks like I may be able purchase a hammer or press here very shortly. I was wondering what would the pro's and con's would be, versus each other. I am leaning towards the hammer but I'm tempted because of the control you can get with the press, not to mention, flatter and square. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Knifeman

The best way to decide, is to weigh what you expcet to be producing the most. If your working a majority of "straight steel" blades, with occasional damascus, look hard a hammer. It will give you the ability to move metal more quickly than the press, and with a little practice, you can practically for a complete blade without using hand hammers. On the other hand, if damascus is your goal, the press is the ticket. I've had mine for a few years now, and have all but eliminated flaws in my damascus because of it. I'm lucky in the respect that I have a Little Giant and one of Jeff Carlisile's presses. I suppose if I was force to give up one, ............I'd give up a foot instead. I've been in the market for a decent 50lb. Little Giant for a couple of years now, so if you know of one, dorp me a note.

I have a 50 lb little giant and it does work good for drawing out steel and transforming ball bearings into knife blanks. But it doesnt make damascus like Eds press so it is up for sale. I have been gathering data to build a press alot like the x-press and cant wait to get started on it. I only hope that if I sell the hammer that I can still smash a bearing. Bruce

Thanks for the info guys! I'm definately looking at Damascus. But now, I have a whole shop full of L6 and nothing to mix it with! GAWD!!! Happy New Year to all.
