Baby snake I.D. Rattlesnake?

Definitely a western hog nose, see the upturned nose, it's hard and used for digging in cracks in the earth where frogs may hide. He is also rear fanged, and some people have reactions to their bites.

I remember a hog nose playing dead back when I was a kid but haven't seen one in some time. As for the OP's snake.....king cobra! Well maybe in a few years it will play that game as well.

Edit. Just read the OP killed it. Oh well, the toads will thank yea.

Well what you have there is a gopher/bull. He is one of u.s.a most common and beneficial snakes. I put my it profession on it D.V.M Herp Scie
Yeah, that's what it looks like to me. Easy to mistake them for a buzz tail at first glance.

could also be a juvenile cottonmouth. They have those markings before they mature

viperid head would justify this identification. Fortunately the only land dwelling elapid on this continent is the easily spotted coral snake, so except for curiosity, the only thing you need to know is if it has a triangular head, steer clear. Viperid bites are usually not as lethal as elapid bites, but they are a whole lot messier.
