IMO, knives should be treated like colours. Used honourably until retired as is to the regimental chapel. Give it a new edge if needed but keep it, for want of a better word, in proper nick.
 
Absolutely--if you clean it up, it will be hard to distinguish from any other knife. But as it is, it's a record of his life during that time he'll never forget.

Please thank him for his service--that's an inspiring photo of him with the knife in hand, BTW. :thumbup:
