Thanks to those who gave advice. I settled on mailing most of my sharps out, and taking a RAT 3 and SAK in checked baggage as a backup. Rat 3 and Leatherman charge got most of the workout. Drove from AZ to Massachusetts in about 60 hours, the southwest was beutiful and I was glad to spend about 2 days kicking around Jerome, AZ if for no other reason than to see the desert for the first time. Since we had the use of a moving truck, preparing for cross country was relatively easy in terms of space for packing. 20 gallons of water was easily stored in the back, along with several Nalgene bottles for the truck cab. Lots of camping gear and emergency gear (way more than necessary) was packed for easy access, and my edc bag fit nicely behind the front seat. Of course the trip was uneventful, but it was nice to know I had everything I needed at arms reach, even though I was 3000 miles from home. No survival, but lots of preparedness.
