A good friend of mine met his Russian wife through the internet 6 years ago. Corresponded/phoned for quite a while and visited a multiple times. Wonderful lady.
Although not the traditional route, it has worked very well for them.
This was a girl the Cantina would appreciate. I met her at my linguistics conference, where she's a student in the Department of Turkish Philology. (It's hard to tell, but she's actually an ethnic Oghuz Turcoman -- ie. from Turkmenistan -- not a Russian.) However, she's doing her dissertation on the terminology of pan-Turkic traditional weapons, especially their swords and daggers. What an icebreaker!
Us after I gave my lecture to the conference:
She told me too that last year, after that Chechen hostage incident in Moscow, she was attacked by a group of drunk Russian guys on the subway. But she drew a knife on them and backed them down with, "Touch me again and I'll kill you!"
She wasn't a bringback, unfortunately, but I did make use of my time there. I tell you, my friends: Travel whenever you can. The world is full of amazing people.
