Back from the NY Custom Knife Show! LOTS OF PICS!

I took a bunch of pics of BFC members and knives and as soon as I locate the USB cable for the camera I will post some pics.

It was great to meet a bunch of you guys. We truly are a fugly looking bunch, ain't we? ;) I truly believe that "hotel guy" was a bit paranoid. I guess seeing all those blades "outside" the room scared him.

Come the March show I will be buying quite a few knives. I saw some great knives that I should have bought then, but I was window shopping for future purchases. A Muh,muh,Muh nun, Mmnandi is at the top of the list as well as an American Tomahawk, though I don't know which one yet. The Strider guys were great and I will hopefully be sending them a check soon for a modified BD model for firefighting duties.

All in all it was great show. I wish I could have made it all three days. Oh well, in a few months we have the ECCK Show. I can't wait.

Louis-
Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. I liked some of Theuns Prinsloo knives. Does anyone know how to get in contact with him.

I just came back a short while ago. Had my name badge on, but didn't see any of you guys. Will try again in March at the ECCK Show.

However, in the meantime, I had great one-on-one conversations with the likes of Darrel Ralph, Chris Reeve, Bob Dozier and others.

If you've never had the experience of a major show, try to do it. These makers are some of the most decent, great people you can ever meet. I feel great that I got there.:) :)

Louis - thanks for posting those pics! Nice to meet you, by the way.

That "mystery" fixed blade you showed was made by Johan Gustaffson, an incredibly talented maker from Sweden. That particular knife was on a dealer's table (forgot which one), but Johan was at the show himself. He's extremely friendly and his damascus is incredible. There was a thread in the custom forum a little while ago that talked about his work. He had a folder that I wanted, but by the time I finally decided to buy it, it had sold... so I placed an order with him instead :) His website is: http://johanknives.com

As for Scott Cook - yeah, he had some fantastic knives too. I should know - I left with Large Owyhee Hunter in BG42 with beautiful snakewood scales. Scott is quite a gentleman too. He was a pleasure to meet, and his knives are an absolute steal. The piece I brought home is absolutely flawless and I couldn't be happier with it. See a pic here.

Overall, it was an excellent show. I really enjoyed meeting everyone and seeing some old friends too. Nowhere fast - I owe you a beer (or five)! :)

By the way, I also picked up a few Kershaw chives after playing with one after dinner Friday night. Those little knives are just too cool! I'll probably buy five more as gifts for friends and coworkers. :)

I know I'm leaving a lot out, but I've written too much already...

Thanks to all - makers, dealers, customers, and organizers for a fantastic show!

Those ATC Hawks, and their new mini-axe are winners!!!!

The stress is too much for me!!!!

Guys,

I met a bunch of great BF folks in the lobby on friday--Martial Way, Lifter, PhilL, Wulf, and others. Just wanted to say how valuable it was to have shared in some of the excitement of the morning while waiting for the doors to spring open! You guys know how to make a new guy feel at home!

BTW--more of my pics in the 'Custom Knives' Category

I really can't stress enough, how much I enjoyed meeting you guys!!

Remster,

I can't wait to see those pics!

Coop,

You are now officially one of "us". Welcome aboard. Don't be such a stranger, start posting more!

Very nice show. Good to see only a few people were scared away. I was glad to be able to meet some of you. Would have liked to meet more, but had to leave before 3:00 to get home in time for the Sabbath. Maybe next time the meet can be scheduled a little earlier. A lot of beautiful knives and great talking to the makers. First show in a long time I didn't have the cash to buy anything, but had a great time anyway. Wait till next year! ;)

Thanks, Frank. I went into the show swearing that I wouldn't buy another NK... and then the Carter spoke to me. ;) I love that Carter camp knife that you picked up. It's a real beauty.

I was interested in getting a large, light Bowie like a Black Cloud Argentine & was disappointed to learn that Ernie is no longer making knives. Anyway, I'm going down the aisle & the Bagley Bowie stopped me dead in my tracks. Here's a pic. I'll post more with a review in the Custom Forum later in the week.

Wolfmann, ECCKS will be in New York City at the Crown Plaza Hotel, a couple blocks away from where the NY Custom Show was this weekend. It is somewhere around the second weekend in March.

I didn't get a chance to say goodbye before we were "kicked" out of the lobby.:D

So that's what happened to all of you kids. Darn it, I told you not to run around the lobby with knives.

It was great to see you guys and especially because there was such a good turn out at the show. All the makers I talked to said they had a very good show.

I want to thank Andy P. from ATC for being the focal point of the show for so many of the BFC members, not just for the BFC Name tags, but just because of Andy's magnetic personality.

I knew I wouldn't have any money to buy anything, I just went to socialize and look, and I'm glad I did. When you know you're not buying it does kind of free you up to look at what's there. So when some of the first timers to the show asked what should they look at or buy it was easy to point them in the right direction. Of the suggestions I made I know there were connections with Darrel Ralph, PJ Tomes, Russ Easler and Mike Irie. I know how much I learned by touring a show with Tom Wilkinson and it was fun to play the same role for someone else.

Of the makers I met from BFC for the first time it was great to see the work of Brad Duncan and Scott Cook. There were far too many great knives to comment on, but one knife that stands out was by ABS MS Bailey Bradshaw. This knife was a 3 blade slipjoint whittler, pearl scales and sculpted bolsters. Not my price range and not what I would normally buy, but what a stunning piece of work. From "Show & Tell" with the BFC members the knives that really stand out were Ebbtides', Bruce Evans' "Ebony & Ivory Bowie", Yitzs' Barret Smyhte "Gents Knife", and Sky Mastersons', Herb Derr "Damascus & Stag hunter".

Luckily, I didn't go home empty handed. My thanks to Bobby Branton for a beautiful Stag Boot Knife and to my buddy Darrel for the DeltaZ "Osprey". ;)

For those of you that are interested, several of us are going to be at the Empire Knife Club meeting on Wed. Nov. 14th. If you need information drop me an E-mail.

i would also like to add that Phil is tops with me!! the show was awesome! my bud Jay (Stihl) and i were 1st timers at the NY show and Phil took the time to show us around and introduce us to numerous makers and a few fellow formites...too bad we missed you Phil when we left so i would personally thank you for your help ,companionship and direction... by the way i picked up a beautiful Easler stag hunter with a nickle silver guard... this is one show that wont be soon forgotten!! knife people are the best in my book:D

Hey Guys,

Was supposed to be there this weekend hanging at the ATC booth, but had an emergency with a friend.

This girl I've known for years got beaten very badly by her husband -- he used a wood dining room chair and beat her over the back, among other things, so I took her kids in while she is in the hospital. We're arranging for her to get safe quarters, before her hubby gets out of jail on his $25K bond. I always told her I hated the guy, and that he was dangerous. Accck. I had some LEO friends visit her to arrange for protective orders, which have gone through, and now we gotta figure things out.

Anyway, sorry if I dragged the thread down...I was really was looking forward to this show and seeing you all.

I'll catch you all in March.

Best,

Brian.

Brian,

Oh my god. I am so sorry that happened to your friend. At least she is going to be okay.

I was lookin forward to meeting you at the show. Like you said though, there is the show in March! I'll see you there.

I hope all goes well with your friend, I am sure she is in good hands.

Actually, the head security guy from the lobby is a nice fella. He is a hired professional. But unfortunately, several custom pieces "walked" out of the showroom this year. Next time bring some regular fruit yogurt (NOT the non- fat type) and offer it to him on the side. Maybe he' ll smile a bit.

BTW, I' m sure many saw the work of R.O Easler. Small/ medium fixed blades with high polished ATS- 34, soldered bolsters, tapered tangs, liners, fancy handles. $140 to start with. A lot of knife for the money!

See y'all in March.

Nakano

PS- Frank, let me know when you' re ready to let that TTKK go... :)
