Back in, or back out?

How many times have you been hauled over the coals for calling your female colleagues WPCs? :D :D I know it happens to most old timers.

Roger

I am one of the few remaining dinosaurs: A 1970's-vintage beat bobby! As to sexism, I plead guilty. One of the plonks I used to work with was reminiscing with me about the good old days recently. She reminded me that - even on urgent calls - I'd unlock the car door and hold it open for her!

My retirement party's in December. I have stipulated that all female attendees have to dress like the girls from the Robert Palmer video for Addicted to Love!

For what it's worth, a driving safety auditor at work told me that backing in is preferable for following reasons..
1..You have been driving, are in that mode of thought, and backing up is a concentration exercise, so you will be more focused, probably, than when you have just come out of wherever, with your mind still on the audit, bill, or receptionist. :) .
2.. When you are backing in you only have to worry about (probably) immobile objects, backing out you have less visibility where you are going, and no warning off the hotrodding kid 4 cars down, a lot more variables.
I work for a utility with a large fleet and it is company policy to always back in if possible.

I never back in, the reason may be that I want to get out of the car ASAP when I get home or reach my destination. Or maybe it's just a habit.

We learnt this in traffic school - once apon a time - about parking lots:

If you're parking to the right - back in
If you're parking to the left - front in

I totally blanked out trying to visualize this.

Are you talking about right-hand drive or left-hand drive, and are the parking spaces at right angles to the road or slanted?

Parking spaces at right angles, left hand drive, driving on the right hand side of the road. Excuse the crude drawing; I would park head first in spaces 1-4 and reverse into spaces 5-8.

Always reverse in. As an LEO, I learned that early.

Ditto.

In this area it's actually called "combat parked." As in, "All vehicles will be combat parked alongside the command post." Meaning: "Back 'em in."

No kidding.

Oh and if I happen to front in, at the mall say, I never pull through, out of courtesy. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to pull into a spot only to have someone pull through from the other side thereby taking "my" spot and usually losing me the one that should've been "theirs" on the other side of the row.

Of course they do this because they're afraid to have to back up at all. -You know who you are out there. Be kind to the rest of us, practice Reverse a little, it's not that hard. ;)

My vote goes for backing in. Two reasons: First, as already mentioned by uitlander, when backing out there are many more things that you can possibly hit. Second, and I'm surprised no one mentioned this, is that when you are going head first into a stall, the steering wheels are in the front, so the rest of the car has to follow the line that is set by the front. That's why so many cars have dings and scrapes on the corners of their bumpers, from other drivers who cut the turn too tightly when pulling head first into a stall.

When backing in, the steering wheels are in the back, so the back of the car can be placed, and the line the rest of the car takes can be adjusted, much more so then when going in head first.

Back in, normally.

Reasons for backing in (some already mentioned):

- Safety. Easier to spot someone (kids) or things (carts, oncoming traffic) that may be in your path.

- Exodus speed. If you have to "get" fast, pulling out is quicker than backing out then driving away.

- Engine access. Easier to jump or wrench when bonnet end is out.

Reasons for pulling in (again, some repeats)

- Loading/unloading. Easier to access trunk or rear/bed of SUV/minivan/pickup.

- Speed. Many reasons. Situational demands.
