Back in the market (which Mini?)

Hello all,

About a year ago I purchased an Emerson Combat Karambit folder from New Graham Knives and it completely turned my 'knife world' upside down. Now I'm at the point where all I want are Emerson's; I don't feel I'd be satisfied with anything else at this point after owning such a quality piece.

Since the Karambit is not exactly suited for daily carry, I wanted to pick up something a bit more compact and stealthy. Right now I've got my eye on the CQC7 Mini and / or the Commander Mini.

I was wondering if anyone could weight in on either of these two knives and which you perhaps prefer? Also, comparison pics would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to see a Mini CQC7 next to a pencil or something alike so that I can get a decent idea of the size.

Thank you very much!

P.S. This is a very nice forum, seems you guys have a great little community here.

I have one of each of those in Mini size. If I had a chance, I'd replace the two of them with a Mini-CQC15, which to me combines the strengths of both in a single knife.

Thanks for the input! I'm going to take a look at the 15.

EDIT: Oh I see, it's basically a tanto Commander. Very cool.

Dude, get the mini 15 if you like the Commander and the 7. It's basically a mixture of both into a smaller size.

What is your max blade length? Mini cqc-7 is only 2.9" while mini-8 (horseman) is 3.5".

If 3.5 is ok for you, then most cqc-7's are a possibility and there are quite a few variations there.

I have the horseman and mini-cqc7bw (tanto with wave) and if I could have only 1 I'd have to go with the horseman for the handle mostly.

The mini-7 is a little tank though, but the horseman's handle is great...but it is a longer blade, 2.9 vs. 3.5.

Just depends what size you are limited to or want.

I'd like to stay pretty short, but not go for a snubby. I think under 3" would be perfect so the mini 7 is pretty enticing. This would be primarily for daily carry and be my 'beater', if you will.

Also, are the Minis only available WITH Wave at the moment? I'd prefer one without as I like to be able to remove the knife from the pocket sometimes without opening the blade.

You're welcome.
Tom Krein Regrind. :)
Or, TKR. ;)

Oh, that would be with the spear point, no? If the Mini Commander came in a Wave-less version I would be all over that.

And thanks again for the info.

No. I saw a Commander with the Krein regrind, it was awesome. The Krein regrind makes the Commander blade a better piercer. You could have the wave removed.

Ahh, good to know. And as far as having the Wave removed, well, I'd just hate to do that. I'd be afraid it would affect the knife negatively somehow.

Perhaps I should just go ahead and get the standard sized CQC7 / Commander without the Wave..

The wave is easy to remove with out causing any problems for the knife, I have de-waved
one of my 12s and a 7b. The warranty is pretty much destroyed though. :p

What general part of the country are you located in? If it were practical, I could meet you somewhere and you could handle the two I mentioned. I'm in the southern New England area. FWIW...

Greaves--- Go with your plan B.

I think that's what I'm going to do. :)

Now all I have to do is decide which one I want.

Thanks very much for that offer but unfortunately, I'm all the way on the left coast.

And while we're on the subject, do any of you find it inconvenient having the Wave function on your knives? Don't get me wrong, I think Wave is absolutely brilliant and there's nothing quite like that feeling of the perfect draw followed by the satisfying and solid 'click'.

I just mean at those certain times you want to use the knife without opening the blade as you draw, do any of you find that to bother you? A good example would be at the end of the day and you're taking the piece out of your pocket to be stored for the night.

No...the only potential issue is that you need to be aware of the possibility of an intended wave opening. I've had that happen - once. No adverse result.
