Quick question for anyone who caries there knife cliped to there back pocket. Where do you cary it? Closer to the center of your back or closer to your waist? And most importantly do you carry it tip up or tip down? I am asking this because i have started carying a tenacious and it fits better closser to my waist with tip up but i am aprehensive about keeping it like this because if the blade opens when i go to pull it out or get my wallet i will definitly be cut :(

I have tried rear pocket carry several times and have always had an experience that showed me not to continue the experiment.

I cut a back pocket in half once with an open construction knife once. The pocket went into the construction while trying to slip the knife into my pocket (tip down) and partially deployed the blade and SLICE!

Tip up with a weak detent is something I won't do in any pocket.

Opinions...

I only carry folders with a STRONG detent or tip down in my rear pocket. That said, I don't really carry in my rear pocket all that much. I have been carrying a serrated Tasman Salt in the rear left pocket as an experiment and it carries well, but I prefer IWB appendix or right front pocket.

IMO, back pocket carry is a great way to lose your knife. I have a co-worker who lost his clipped Gerber boxcutter from his back pocket just last week.

I back pocket carry closest to my waist tip up, BUT its my back left pocket and only the knife is in the pocket.

Never hand any issues carry my M1 this way (and I've carried it ALOT over the last several years)

I agree the back pocket carry has probably contributed to more lost knives than just forgetting to pick up a knife after use. I also find it uncomfortable.
For a large folders or a fixed blade. I like a belt sheath, high ride or horizontal carried.
Small folders with or without clips go in my side pockets.
Your knife, do as you choose. Good luck.

thanks for the imput guys! i realy like back pocket because i reach into my front pockets alot and i find my knife is always in the way and since i rarly reach for my walet i figured it would b great but i think i will suck it up and keep it up front for safty reasons.

My back pocket serves one purpose - to cover my boxer shorts! No knives back there for me.

I carry a Kershaw Shallot 1840CKT (made in USA & dated Jan '08) in my right rear pocket, tip down. I tried to deploy it in my pocket, but it wouldn't, as the blade spine is right next to the pocket seam. The wallets are in my left pockets (front and rear, and both really thin - hence 2). Boker Tree Brand HC medium stockman in the front right and a Hen & Rooster "rostfrei" in the front left.

Back right pocket. Tip down.

I have my wallet in my left back pocket, so the only thing in my back right pocket is my EDC and my CRKT Tao pen. I haven't lost a knife from carry in my back pocket, but I have come close. I just bend the pocket clip a bit more so it has stronger hold.

I've had Leek pulled out from my back pocket by my backpack. After that, I'm not carrying my knife in my back pocket anymore.

If I do though, I'd think I would go with a knife that has a strong clip and grippy handle plus the blade against the lining of the pocket.

KJlost, just like that - against the lining of the pocket - that the way mine rides and no problems. the knife is very thin, with oxide coated scales. I grasp it with my right thumb and fingers on the scales and with a ~ 30-60 deg. rotation can deploy the blade with my index finger.

kershaw blur with assistance disabled tip down up against the seam of my RRP. my wallet fits right next to it.

I've carried a CS Hatamoto for 5 years in my back right pocket, not clipped on just dumped with no problems, but i would be nervous with a knife that could slip open more easily.

The cool thing about Kershaw's torsion bar deployment. it takes manual force until the blade opens to about 30 deg. before it takes over.

I carry most bigger knives in my back pocket on and off. Usually my Buck 110 or occasionally 112, standing up, right next to my wallet. Works great, and doesn't have me wearing a belt sheath (IMO looks silly when you wear a shirt untucked with stuff on your waist) Started carrying a speedbump there the last two days, works really well, tip down, pushed all the way toward my right arm with the blade spine against the pocket. There is no way for it to open, and it keeps my from pockets clear.

I carry a Para 2 and CRKT Eros in my back left pocket, both tip down, both clipped to the edge of the pocket. Helps not to have a lot in the pocket.
