Heading back up to the woods tomorrow for a few days of camping and hunting. Hoping to score another hog, and a decent buck. I will be sans boat this go round, so I have been studying my topos, trying to find road access close to a shallow shoal on the river so I can cross, and get back onto the hogs, and think I have it pegged.

Thundersticks in play will be:
Marlin 30/30 (stoked with 170 gr. Win. Silvertips)
H&R Ultra Hunter in .308 (loaded with 150 gr. Speer Grand Slams)

Sharp pointy things in tow will be:
760 SS Mora (carabiner clipper onto belt, or waist pack)

SS Clipper (camp knife)

Camillus Heat (my edc folder)

Ontario Marine Raider Bowie (chopper, kindling splitter, and misc. beater)

Gerber pack axe (see Ontario above)

Gerber folding saw (light camp sawing, clearing shooting lanes & removing limbs flush for stand placement, etc.)

One pair small anvil pruners (trail clearing, & trimming around stands/blinds)

Camera will be along as well, so hopefully I will be providing some Hog Hammer pictorials!!

Will holler when I get back. Wish me luck

Just in town for the evening. No meat on the pole yet, but we had about 14 shoats/piglets, maybe 10-25 lbs. come within about 15 ft. of camp Fri. and Sat. nights. We can't gun or bow hunt in the campsite, but we did fashion a nice 4 1/2 foot long, oak "hog knocker" with a wide bevel to break necks/smash heads if they come back, and get close enough. Other than that and 15-20mph winds all day, nothing much to report.

One thing I forgot, my nephew with his 1st firesteel, built a fire Fri. afternoon in a pouring rain, using fatwood fuzzies, and splinters, and striking with his Spydie Native. He was proud as a peacock, and I was there to give advice, moral support, and eventually, congratulations. It took several strokes, as the pine was literally soaking wet, and the 1st few showers just dried it. It sputtered, and spit, but lit like a charm. He is now a full scale ferro convert!

Later guys,

Well, I'm back! scored 2 more piggies and a nice 6 point.
The hogs were smallish, maybe 10 lbs. each. A .22 would have been best for them, as the 30/30 was overkill on rabbit sized piggies. I gave them to my nephew who had been wanting some little 'uns, and he was greatly appreciative, even though he had to clean them.

Monday afternoon about 4pm, after only maybe 20 minutes on my new stand site, a plump, big bodied 6 pt walked into the cut, and the .308 spoke. The shot was maybe 100-110 yds. he ran about 50 yds. and was down.

As to W&SS type stuff, I used the crap out of my Gerber pack axe, on various and sundry cutting and chopping chores, with very satisfactory results.

The 760 Mora & my SS Clipper cleaned the deer, made some fatwood fuzz sticks, helped harvest about 1 1/2 lbs of pine resin, and helped me fashion a snare, (just for kicks, not real hunting) I will discuss it in another thread.

My folding saw, and pruners saw time clearing briars, and making lanes around blinds.

All in all, a good time. It is my one time of year to spend with my dad, who will be 70 in Feb., and I count each deer camp a real blessing. He instilled in me, my love and respect of the outdoors, and now I get to help him in return.
So here is a sincere tip of the hat to all the dads, uncles, neighbors, friends, etc., who have blazed a trail for us to follow, and may we have the wisdom, and foresight to lead others into a love and understanding of nature.
