Back to knives!

I'm glad you're doing better! I just recently came back to the knife community after several years as well. You'll probably notice that quite a bit has changed since you left, depending on how long you were gone. The first thing I noticed is that knife designs as a whole have shifted in a bit of a different direction and that what your average knife nut deems important in a knife design has changed quite a bit also.

Nice choice on knife!
Hey, since I know you were somebody who was here before, and came back, may I ask what the shift(s) seems to be that you have noticed?
Also, about a particular trend, do you think the whole tactical thing has gotten larger or smaller since its original 80s/90s heydey, or is it just a steady contingent of a certain market?
Just curiosities, answers welcome from all.

That makes sense. Fuck poachers.

I do want a big bore, maybe a 0.50 cal.
Soon they will make a 0.50 cal semi auto or full auto LOL

I swear, another 10 years, air rifles will catch up or surpass firearms.
Mm, I have been impressed. Thinking about getting a .30 cal, or a repeating .22, enjoying my plain old pump Crosman .22 very, very much.

Need to find some unincorporated land so I can shoot outdoors by myself without hassle.

Luckily my moms BF has a large yard (6 or 7 acres) and has some targets already set up for me.
Other than that, I plan to shoot on federal land (blm), since it's legal to.

I often camp on federal land, there's a ton here in California. Huge areas of land no one occupies, some of it is turned into state or national parks.

That sounds similar to where my cabin is in New York. You can travel the Adirondack forest for days and never see anyone.

Oh hey, I am in CA too! L.A County though, so no large space like that. Your spot sounds awesome, I hope to move somewhere with a bit more breathing room and set myself up a nice little range, too.

While I don't think it was permitted where I was, I had a great time at the Angeles National Forest at Crystal Lake, camping a weekend and being able to fire in peace for a little while. I do not think it is permitted, but if it it is "out there" enough and you behave courteously, smartly, and cleanly (eg, I fire all my pellets into some type of catcher), all is well with the world. Camping - another thing I have been getting into more.

Ah I'm currently in LA. Been near the cedar sinai hospital for the last month at an airbnb due to the many appointments.

Crystal lake is a beautiful area! When I camp, I make sure I leave the place cleaner than when I arrived. But I usually camp in dispersed areas where no one probably has camped before, middle of nowhere type places that require a 4x4.

The main things that really stuck out to me after browsing the forum again for a few days were: The "general consensus" of people on here seems to be much more interested in thin blades and hollow grinds now days. When I first came here (in about 2007) people generally seemed to want big overbuilt folders. Not necessarily big as in long, but people really liked thick blades and strong locks. A lot of the interest was on what your particular folder could do for you in a survival situation. And the market provided for us. I was also of that mindstate much of the time. It was all about who's lock could hold up to the most use and what you could do with your blade, other than your standard stuff, if you needed to. Now of course there were people that didn't like that stuff, but that seemed to be the main focus. I was surprised to see that "everyone" wanted thin blades now days and deep hollow grinds. Flat grinds were in style back then and I remember many people looking down on hollow grinds because they weren't as strong.

Also, all the strange opening holes surprised me. Not like your standard Spyderco hole or a slotted hole like on a Buck/Mayo TNT, but all the elongated opening holes and fullers. Just a different style that I didn't really like and still don't much like. I think really that that style is hot with Chinese manufacturers right now so we're seeing a lot of those.

And finally, I was bewildered when I saw people hailing these strange knives that I'd never seen before with immaculate fit and finish but made in China. When I left the knife scene Chinese knives were still crap. I can't think of any companies that were making any high end knives that knife collectors on here would be interested in except Reate. Reate was around but was a very small niche. I remember carrying a District 9 on a passaround here about 10 years ago. Come to think of it Spyderco was making their Taichung models at that point and everyone was really impressed with those.

But yea, just a lot has changed and it's interesting to see. As far as the 80s/90s heyday thing, I do not know. I first started reading Bladeforums a lot in the mid 2000's. I don't have much knowledge of trends and what not before then, although I'm learning.

Well, no one lived more than 10 years with this device. That was just an average.
Who knows, maybe I'll get extremely lucky and qualify for heart transplant.
My primary care doctor received a heart transplant, he's doing well so I hope its an option.

I was denied twice due to having alcohol nicotine and cannabis in my blood prior to surgery. They said I'm not a responsible person if I enjoyed drugs and alcohol..
They only give hearts to sober responsible people, mostly children.

No one ever has. Our camp is on 17,000 acres just North of that huge metropolitan area...
