I have been looking at the tweeners for some time and have been debating between the 16 and 17. I actually asked this question early this year, but never did buy one.

I want a general use knife for the farm / homestead. Something that can be used daily for just about anything from cutting bailing twine,
or rope, use for building projects, to butcher chickens, deer, goats if needed, food prep in the kitchen, etc.

BK-17 --- Love the looks and robustness of the saber grind. I think the clip point is pretty sweet looking well. Mostly looks is what attracts me to this knife.

BK-16 --- The looks of this knife really does not appeal to me all that much but I wonder if it would be better suited to more general tasks. Has a FFG which would cut better.

So what do you guys think would be best for my application. This knife will be a true EDC for hard farm / homestead use, not just occasional bushcraft type of woods bumming. I have a little 3" pukko that I carry right now but want one of these for days when I need more blade.

Thanks a lot,
Greebe

Hard to beat the 16 for general all around utility. Unless you have some chores or tasks that would be easier with the clip point, I'd go with the 16, but in the end, either should be very capable of your intended use. If you really like the looks of the 17, go for it. It won't let you down.

you could always buy the 16 and use it for a while.
Then, if you just hated the drop point look, talk to one of the guys here on the forum about converting it to a straight clip.
you'd lose any warranty coverage, but would have the look you like and the FFG sliceyness you want.

The 16 is a great all around knife. I use it for almost everything except chopping. You can use it to baton sections off larger wood. I think it is one of the best bushcraft blades out there and I do have lots to compare it to. I still pick it over my esee 3/4, condor, cold steel master hunter (vg10), esee laser strike, tops bob and busse ratmandu (infi). I do have a busse son of badger on the way that I hold some promise for but I think I will still grab for the 16. The ergos are amazing but the blade performs amazing in ffg. I have a saber 16 and love it and would preform similarly to the 17 (I think) but the ffg is just the better slicer/ cutter and the difference in batoning of the two is negligible. I have a 15 on the way and am sure it will slice better due to blade geometry but the 16 is the best bang for the buck out there.

The 16 is such a well rounded blade. It excels at most tasks and can handle just about everything you can think to throw at it.

Either way you good but with the 16 your better....

Cheers

You can't go wrong with either one.
I like the 17.
The difference in slicing between the 2 is minimal imo.
The clip point allows for more detailed work & design is tough. There's a pic thread where a guy sticks knife in tree then stands on it.
There are plenty of threads/reviews on both.
Let us know which one you go with.

I prefer the BK16 but it's my opinion that you need to own both first to know which you perfer. It's different for everybody and task specific.

I chose the 16 because I do a lot of wood processing. The drop point is better for batoning and splitting small kindling, so it wins.

If I wanted a fighting knife as well, I'd probably go for the 17, though the 15 is the best fighting knife. To me this blade is more a tool than a weapon, so I prefer the 16.

This discussion was easier when they were the same knife..

Do you you particular look for or want robustness when skinning?

Either would work for skinning but many skinning knives are upswept at the tip like the Bk17.
The more defined point also is better for detail work.

You will love either im sure ..personally im a drop point kind of guy i find it easier for cleaning my squirrels and deer but a clip point works as well its just personal pref.

As many of you might have heard or read somewhere I think the Sixteen is the way to go........ I like the blade geometry of the Sixteen........Nothing wrong about the Clip point, it works just fine....... The full flat grind is slicier and I like that......

I actually prefer the look of the 16 over the 17. Also seems more functional to me. I actually just picked one up today off it the exchange . Cannot wait till it shows up.

I think you would be happy with either one.

The 16 gets my vote. Very slicey. Great cutter. If the 16 had been around in Kephart's day, he would have carried it and we'd never have heard of him....

It's hard to go wrong with a full flat ground drop point. It's an extremely utilitarian blade shape. For that reason, my vote would be for the BK16.

16 is the one I would choose. And I also like the looks of sweet 16 better than the 17.

For looks alone - I like the 15.

This is an old post, but for posterity sake I am going to update.

I got the BK-16 and am happy with it. Still like the looks of the 17 better, but I believe the functionality of the 16 will suit me better. I also like the FFG as it is better for food prep.
Good knife glad that I got it.
