Last year we took a 3 day trip to the Saco River from New Hampshire to Maine with the goal of exploring 33 miles of some of the most beautiful country in the North East. However we only did about 19 miles that trip do to very low water conditions and having way too much fun.

This year they have very high water levels and we aimed to finish what we started last year. So 4 of us from last year as well as 4 others headed down the Saco River in New Hampshire on Sunday morning to reach Hiram, Maine by Tuesday afternoon.

Traveling by canoe is my favorite way of experiencing the Wilderness. Although we didn't see allot of wildlife we saw a bunch. More importantly we had a great time, I think it may have even been better than last years trip. The following pics and text will hopefully show you why.

We all started the trip in high spirits and kept that spirit throughout our journey.

Simon smiling thinking I'll help him paddle from the front. Little did he know I meant to spend every minute with one of my two fishing rods I brought in my hand.:)

Even though we wanted to keep a good pace, we had to make a pit stop at Pleasant Pond

Soon it was time to call it a day, and find a camp site. Last year Poison Ivy was the scourge that left us with very few places to camp. This spot Simon and I found didn't have much and appeared to be a good to go.

It was lacking down wood, so off we went to get some.

With plenty of wood we got the fire going, opened a gallon of my special lemonade and got to cooking.

Once I went into the tree line to set up my hammock, I quickly found out that we would have a new scourge this trip.
On the sand bar they were bothersome, but in the woods they were unbearable! Clouds of mosquito's would surround you in a matter of seconds. They laughed at my deet and permethrin soaked clothes and hammock.

We toughed it out with a big Smokey fire, great food, and lots good beverages!

So far I have acquired incriminating photos of the following WSS mods. Brian Jones, and Joezilla. I now get to finally add Kevin to the list!

Day 1 ended in a fog, but all slept well and Day 2 would be just as much fun and filled with awesome river finds!

After a great breakfast it was off.

Note the inner tube found pretty early that morning. It would come in handy later that day.

We headed down alot of little channels trying to discover little ponds to fish.

Many obstacles made it slow going

Some were not passable due to flora

and some due to fauna

Back on the main river, Kev spotted a back pack in a tree. Here's what was inside.

Let's see, 3 winter hats, a tarp, cordage, deodorant, anti-psychotic meds, 3 packs of Marlboro reds, about 13 condoms, knife, flashlight, a mason jar filled with weed, and a wallet with all his ID's. Very interesting float gear eh???

Further down the river, we spotted something in the form of a person caught up in a tree close to shore. Kevin immediately gave assistance.

Simon and I took the inner tube and kindly towed her to safety.

She was very appreciative!!!

Soon she was off and decided to swim back.

We stayed and took lunch.

Pulled pork. oh so good.

Some ate themselves into a coma

Once back on the water, some passed out while they were suppose to be rowing me around..

While Simon slept, I took in the scenery.

We found and outstanding large sandbar that would allow us to camp away from the tree line so we didn't get drained by mosquito's.

The large campsite also made going potty with out getting near the tree line possible.

Then we set up.

We saw a few Bald Eagles briefly and a few beaver. This one came up for snack across our campsite and I was able to get a pic.

Then I had to clean a few fish

Kevin made a delicious honey coated Twisty bread

We had a great night full of fun, this time a little less intoxicating.

So that's was our trip. I hope you all enjoyed the pics, as we did experiencing them.

Thanks for looking.

So many awesome pics, looks like tons of fun! Food looks gooooood, and the blow up doll is smokin' hot! :D

Yeah T, I don't eat that well when I'm home.... That's a plus with having the canoe to carry all your gear. Bring what ever you want and enjoy!

Looks like loads of fun out there. Thanks for sharing all of the pics with us, bro.

Hell yeah Tony. That looked like an awesome trip. Wish I couldve been there. Thanks for the pics!

Hey GS, great pictures. That river is the spitting image of a river we used to paddle every spring in Central Ontario - the Black (named after the colour of the water).

Couple of things -

It would be helpful to identify any forum members by their forum names. The Simon in the pictures - is that Siguy?

What knife is this:

bd833152.jpg

And the final assessment of the bacon-wrapped Oreo?

Glad you had a great time, now back to painting the crib???? :D

Sorry about that GP. Yes Simon is Siguy, Kevin is k_Estela, John is Tall Quiet Man, and Tom and his son I don't think are members. He owns campingsurvival dot com, and the ladies are not members either.

The knife is a Scott Gossman Bolo, and belongs to Kevin. It's a great camp knife.

I ate the bacon and it was suprisingly very good! Leanna had a few oreos wrapped in bacon and she did like them.

Yup, one more room of the house and I'm done. Then it's back to my normal life. I can't wait!

Thanks GP

Good stuff Brother... Looks like you guys had an awesome time.. Looing forward to hanging soon.

When ever you're ready my friend!

Except for the mosquitoes, I envy you all.

I hate mosquitos, but I can't let them stop me from enjoying the outdoors.

Take a look at Simon's feet. He had more mosquito bites on his feet then anyone had on their whole body..

Er, umm .... I don't even want to know

Fantastic pics and a great looking adventure. I live pretty close to the Saco and have paddled its gentle waters. I've also cross country skied on it during a particularly cold winter. Thanks for sharing with us!

Wow, great pics. It looks like you guys had a blast. Sad that I live in NH and don't really take advantage of this type of stuff.

I used to do more when my boy was in scouts, but "civilized" life wins out more often than not.

Thanks for sharing.

That looks like a fun trip! Thanks for posting.

Is that a jungle hammock in tent mode?
