Does anyone carry a back up knife? And what constitutes a back up knife? I like the idea of a small fixed blade and was wondering what you guys carry.

i carry 5 blades,
my spyderco paramilitary
spyderco ladybug
SAK camper
Spyderco t mag
ESEE izula
i really like the izula for a small fixed blade.

I usually carry two knives. One "tactical" folder, and either a slip joint or a SAK. Are you talking Back Up knife as in last ditch self defense or back up in case you lose/forget/break your main blade?

Emerson LaGriffe, usually. Sometimes a SOG Flash 1 if I want to go folder. I'm pretty big on redundancy.

well ac, thats kinda what I am asking I guess haha. I don't really know, are backups usually for a failure of your primary or are they the last ditch self defense kind of thing?

When im in the woods I usually have a fixed blade, sak, and a maby a folder like a buck 110. Normally ill have my sak cadet and possibly a box cutter or kabar dozier.

when bushbashing, i generally have a fixed blade, a leatherman, a hatchet and, if necessary for the region, a machete.

In the woods, it often helps to have a spare sharp object - I've become a bit paranoid about losing my knives in the bush.

Day-to-day, though, I don't see any reason to carry a spare knife.

Self defense-wise, I have no opinion on that particular subject...

Ive been carrying a Leek and CRKT M16-14SFG. The leek comes out for light duty use and in public use (opening the vent hole on the coffee lid..) The CRKT is for when I might need to do some heavier cutting or needing to use the VEFF serrations. Also it gives a little comfort walking in the city around the bumbs and beggars that sometimes hassle you at the bus stop.

i usually have three on me day-to-day. i keep my kershaw skyline (lately replaced by my new benchie mini-grip) for light duty; it certainly sees the most use and is usually the first thing i reach for. that one stays in my main right side pocket.

i carry something a bit bigger in my right rear pocket for heavier duty/personal comfort in sketchy places. usually it's a byrd g10 crossbill or a kershaw scallion, with a spydie endura coming tomorrow :). at the bottom of that same pocket i keep a case baby butterbean in pocket worn old red bone. that one's my "politically correct" knife as i call it, and is used when i don't want to scare somebody or as a loaner. it also doubles as a nice finger-occupier when there's not too much going on, or a nail trimmer.

Lately I have been carrying a smalled fixed blade (Rat izula, hest and others) and some sort of folding knife (or SAK). I am really glad I have the fixed blade on me. A few weeks ago, I was locked out of my apartment - I didn't feel too bad about using the fixed blade to get the door open. Better that than trying to accomplish the task with an SAK!

If you are in LE and need a backup to your issue gun then in jurisdictions that allow it, best backup is another gun. As a "last ditch knife" the Karambit is designed as a LDK and seems to have a strong following amongst professionals.

If you're talking about having a spare blade (eg you drop your bait knife overboard) - unless you're in a W&S situation does it really matter? Favourite knife for IDITAROD competitors is reported to be a multi-tool. Use common sense and let intended use determine what you should carry and whether or not extra knives are appropriate or even necessary.

For EDC, I carry the following:
Victorinox Camper Plus in a sheath, Waved Byrd Cara Cara, Kershaw RAM, and RAT Izula. This is in addition to the Victorinox Manager on my keyring and SpyderCard in my wallet.

In the woods, I'll have my EDC along with a "field" fixed blade like a Mora. Axes, machetes, and choppers will come with me as needed.

For "tactical" (ie. when I feel I'll need it) I replace the Izula with an Ontario Marine Combat Knife and add a few non-knife items.

In all of the above, I have a .45 and a 26" ASP with me.

I think the Kershaw Half Ton is a great "back up knife" for EDC. It gets the job done, doesn't scare anybody, and for its cost ($9) you can loan it out.

For EDC i carry a BM707 and a BM710HS (both IWB) and i use the 710 for all the tasks i dont want to do with the 707 (e.g. cutting cardboard, larger objects (bread), 'messy/wet things' (like an orange because it's more likely the handle wont get wet ;))).
I guess I try not to offend other people with the 710 if i dont have to. If i'm alone i pick whichever fits best...

I usually have a SAK climber in my backpack but thats because of all the other tools and i dont use it that often.

The main reason for 707 + 710: i like both of them A LOT! :-)

PS.: @ topic: i guess the 707 is the backup for the 710 and the 710 is the backup for the 707 :D
(i dont count that SAK since its in my backpack and not on me - but if both of the BMs wouldn't be available i could get that, too)

I usually carry a folder as my main knife, a CRK or Emerson of some sort and a small fixed blade as a "back up". I quite often carry something
like a La Griffe, Kiku small Northland, WT rainer ring or a more normal shaped knife like a Game warden or other small fixed blade.

I always carry two knives. One is a slipjoint that see's 99% of the work I need a knife for. The other is a medium or large folder that could be classified as the ubiquitous tactical folder,:) and I guess it is a backup knife.

Same with me. Occasionally I do have a fixed blade instead of a slipjoint.
