back up knife

I have a Bark River PSK stashed in my pack for dayhikes in the woods, despite the fact that I'm already carrying two or three other knives in those situations.

Every day? I guess the primary knife I carry is pretty much already considered a backup.

Main blade - Delica or mini grip usually
Backup blade is on my Leatherman (work) or SAK(not at work).

I usually carry two knives. My primary is usually a 3" blade and the second or back up is usually smaller like around 2" inches. These days it either of these:

Small Sebenza and a Mnandi
Benchmade Sequel and a G10 Dragonfly

Around the house I carry a SAK Super Tinkerer. If I leave the house I usually grab a more substantial folder like my Spyderco Native 4 or Manix 2. I still have my SAK on me though.

I like the ease of use of a pocket folder and usually carry one of my spydercos or the skeletool cx in right front pocket. My backup is a neck carried Izula. It gets used quite a bit, especially for the hard and dirty stuff that I don't want to subject my folders to. The folders are great when I just need to quickly cut open a box, cord, envelope. etc.

In the woods and occasionally at work I'll carry a belt knife also, either a Scrapper5 or Fiddleback Nessmuk.

Thanks for all the replies, it sounds like a backup depends on the situation. I definitely agree with the fixed blade in the woods with a folder and multi tool as a back up. (usually what I carry) Plus I like hearing what others are carrying haha.

I wouldn't quite say that it's a backup knife, but I do like to keep a separate knife razor sharp for food purposes. Usually, I'll have my Old Timer 33OT along with another knife, be it a Ka-Bar folding Dozier or, usually these days, a Case barehead slimline trapper with CV blade. The 33OT gets a whole lot of use for all tasks, but the other is almost exclusively used for food. Either way, both knives get stropped on a regular basis.

Primary: Small Sebenza
Backup: Izula
Re-Backup: SAK Farmer
Back-Re-Backup: Swisstool Spirit

Check out Luc Burnley's Kwaiken. It's truly awesome. Tool Steel or Titanium.

On me, my EDC consists of a one of my EDC knives in my rotation which could be a Kershaw Skyline, Buck Vantage Pro or a couple others clipped to my right-front pocket. Then I have mt Victorinix SwissTool Spirit multi-tool on my belt. Finally I have a Victorinox Classic or Cadet in my left-front pocket. Now in my backpack that I take most places and every day to work, I have 1-3 knives - a Zero Tolerance ZT0300 and/or Benchmade 710-D2 McHenry/Williams and/or Spyderco Endura G-10 and/or Spyderco Military Ti framelock (when it arrives).

Now I have been getting back into balisongs so a Bradley Kimura II or if I can ever find a Benchmade 42 may be added as well. And I may pare down the number of folders in my backpack to 1 and also carry a fixed blade like the Falkniven F1 or similar size.

I dunno, when I step back and look at my setup, it seems a bit much. :o

Considering what I would have to go through before I would take out a knife as a defensive tool I can't really see me using one in that role however I will say I do normally carry three knives...

1. A smallish pocket slipjoint that handles 95% of my cutting chores
2. A medium to largish slipjoint or lockback in case of that other 5%
3. A pocket clip knife I can open easily with one hand for emergncies such as cutting a seatbelt, freeing a choking animal, etc.

I don't really consider any of them to be a backup tho as they each have a specific function.

I carry a Kershaw Tyrade and ESEE Izula when I'm out and about, at work it's the Izula and Benchmade 555 mini grip.....

My EDC is light compared to most guys on here. It's usually just something clipped to the right front pocket, plus a Benchmite II on my keys. Rarely do I feel the need to have even the backup, let alone secondary or tertiary backup.

Around town, no, just one knife (any of several EDCs).

In the woods, two, a fixed-blade on my belt, and an old-style SAK Super Tinker as a multitool. (The old version does not have that rediculous hook thing with which they ruined that SAK model a few years ago.)

Bottom line: you are right, it depends on where, when, and how you anticipate needing the knife or knives.

I carry a BM940 in my pocket, and in my man-bag I've got a Graham Bros. custom Ringed Razel, and a SwissTool Spirit. I've been thinking of replacing the razel with a BATAC or a Sus Scrofa. It's in there for larger jobs that aren't for the small folder.

I normally carry either a Benchmade 710 or 720 in my pocket and always carry a fixed blade either benchmade 140 or 180 and leatherman in my truck
