Backcountry camping in NY, NJ area?

Hello folks, does anybody know of good places to do some backcountry camping in the NY, NJ area?
I'm tired of going to conventional campgrounds and dealing with crowds, and so far, the only place I know that I can camp pretty much wherever I want is the Catskill and the ADK's.
I recently took a trip to Harriman State Park in NY and it looked like a nice place to camp for an overnighter, however, since it's a state park, no backcountry camping is allowed (unless I want to use the shelter or stay at beaver pond), at least not wihtout taking some heat from the rangers.
Suggestions?

I have camped allo iver harriman... you can legally camp within 100 yards of every shelter... (there are many).. and most of them are pretty settled back in the woods..
I have also back camped there many times..and have never had a problem... As long as you are conciensious, and take care of the park.. it;s almost a non issue.. also you can contace the NYS dec.. you can legally camp on all state land, and most multi use areas with out a permit as longas you have less than 10 people, and are staying less than 3 days... just becarefull during the fall and early winter though as hunters often use these areas as well.
