There was a thread last year on software to back up DVDs. I have tried DVD shrink and the DVD Decrypt combo and have not had success. Are there easier solutions out there this year? Thanks

I usually use DVD-Shrink DVD Decrypter DVD43 Nero 7
Can backup 95% of my dvds with that combo. some of the newest titles that include Macrovisions new protection scheme are a little tougher. I have had to dig into the cdfreaks.com boards to handle those on a case by case basis.

DVD Shrink & AnyDVD- haven't had any problems yet. :D

DVDClone2 and AnyDVD. No problems whatsoever. Easy as pie. You can back up the whole DVd or just the movie.

They're not public domain, however. You can download 30 day free trial versions. Registered versions of both will run about $59 USD to download.

You get automatic email notices of upgrades.

Shrink and Decrypter work great. DVDFab Decrypter is also very nice.....

www.videohelp.com is the place you want to go for answers....everything you need to know.:D

I've been using DVD Shrink and Roxio Easy DVD 2. Backed up my whole library of 75+ DVD's. Not one problem at all.

Anybody have a movie server? You know a massive harddrive that stores all your movies and the original copy IS the backup?

I use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter myself. Some of the newer copyright protections can't be cracked with these programs so in those cases I use DVDFab Decrypter. Works great. I haven't come across a DVD that DVDFab Decrypter can't crack.

Also I've found that the best programs of this type are always free. I can't see paying $60 for DVDClone2 when DVDShrink works just fine. Especially when it is being used to do some thing that is questionable legally. The developer of DVD Decrypter has already been forced to stop developing the program. I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before others face this as well. Of course there'll always be a new program coming down the line.

I have a Media Center PC that is kind of like that. I just record all of my movies and shows right off of cable. Then from there the world is full of options:

1. Burn it to a regular DVD (pretty much 1 movie per DVD)
2. Copy it as a file and fit multiple movies/shows per DVD
3. Move it to network storage
4. Keep it locally on the PC
5. Delete and forget I ever watched it

The PCs whole purpose in life is just to record and playback music and video. It is connected to my TV, and I control it with a remote just like a TV. I can pause and rewind live TV. Life is good. :D

Oh and on the subject of backing up DVDs it is most defenitely a gray area at best. Legally you have the right to make backups of older media, that was a battle waged out and lost by the RIAA. Now though they are fighting again that if you make one copy there is nothing to stop you from making 100, or 1,000.:jerkit: Guess everybody is a thief these days, and the fact that you paid them for a movie you could have just as easily downloaded or bought on a street corner means nothing.

I would only use free utilities because they way these things change you are bound to lose money in the end. The problem then becomes finding a good utility that works, and won't also install a bunch of other harmful software onto your PC.

Sorry if this is newbie question, but what order do you use DVD Decrypter and DVD shirink? Do you decrypt first, then use shrink, then burn? I am lost. Thanks.

If you use DVD Shrink you will not need to use DVD Decrypter. DVD Shrink will ask you if you want to decrypt the DVD for region use and take care of the decryption from there.

Seems hard to find now, if anyone should inadvertantly email me and a copy of the software should attach itself I would be greatful, theoretically of course. :)

Ken is right. In most cases you just use DVD Shrink all by itself and you can use DVD Decrypter or some other program to burn with. However it is not able to break all of the copy protections out there so in those cases the DVD's must be decrypted by either DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter and then feed the decrypted files into DVD Shrink. In reality if you dont need DVD Decrypter to burn with just skip it altogether and use DVDFab Decrypter for the discs that DVD Shrink cant crack.

hope this helps.

This has been a big help. Our soon to be 3 yr old uses DVD's like sandpaper on our marble coffee table. We are out over $100 in Disney stuff alone. This is great to back up stuff that, if he destroys, it only costs a dollar or two to replace.

Thanks Jamie and Ken,

So, if I use DVD Decrypter, I will need to transfer the entire DVD to Hard Drive as it decrypts the DVD, then bring it it into DVDSHRINK, then burn from DVD shrink. Is that correct?

I would just stick to DVD Shrink and whatever you use to burn it. Adding another process may degrade or corrupt the files.
