I have one of the "Level III" style assault packs and a butt back like the maxpedition Proteus either inside of it or molle 'd onto the back when the pack is full. I have all my survival gear inside the buttpack, so it can be transfered or removed easily. This backpack serves as my day pack for hiking, hunting or fishing. It can be very compact when it needs to be, and actually fit quite a bit when it is opened up. I can fit my lightweight sleeping bag, bivy tent, camp stove and necessary supplies for a comfortable day/night bug out in it. (my internal frame pack covers the rest)
The only set back I have with the pack, is its lack of support structure on the hips. A lot of times for exercise I will weight the pack with ankle and arm weights when hiking, and because the pack is so small it does not have an adequate hip/waist support. I'm a pretty skinny guy, so when i go 40+ pounds it in, my sholders/neck start taking quite a bit of force. There is no way really to fit more in there, but hey, it's a good workout. I ordered the cheaperthandirt.com one to see how I liked it before i purchased a higher quality one, and I expected it to basically fall apart once I got it. I have been quite surprised what this pack as gone through and still held up. I would highly suggest it, because it is now my favorite backpack for weekend get aways, outdoors and the city, because of its versatility.

What I have attached:
For all my survival gear; lighters, multi tool, emergency blanket/poncho, para chord etc....
And i have this mounted on the bottom of the pack so i can reach behind my back and easily pull my knife out. Keeps from getting annoying on my leg when i am hiking.
Sorry for lack of grammar and proofreading, I am winding down finals week. 2 tests to go tomorrow, and this is the only break im giving myself. Posts on Bladeforum.
Have a good day.
