Unless you are using this pack for military purposes, there is almost no job for which a civilian-style outdoors pack will not work better than a military-style pack, in my opinion. The military style packs give you lots of extra weight, but often subpar suspension systems (compared to an outdoors pack) and lots of inconvenient buckles and velcro. What you get in exchange is ruggedness, but the fact is a good quality civilian pack will be more than rugged enough, so the extra weight is not justified.

Just go down to your local REI and check the good selection of buttpacks from good brands like Mountainsmith. If you're looking for a small backpack, then my advice goes double: you'll be way better served by a small outdoors-style pack than a military-style pack.

Oh! ok, So you suggest Mountainsmith? My local store will be having a discount sale soon,, So I may plan to buy one!

The best bang for the buck that i have ever found is my Camelback HAWG Max Gear (as opposed to the regular HAWG stuff). The thing is comfortable as hell, is well insulated and holds all i need. http://www.cases4less.com/detail_camelback_hawgMG.html

I also use a New Sun Total Utility Pouch, got mine from Brigade Quartermasters... it is very, very handy. I love the look of the maxpedition stuff, but have never seen any IRL.
