backpack thread

Before I recommend any brands I'd have to say that packs are a lot like boots.

The one that fits best is the best pack. I always base my buying choice on fit. I don't care how much I like the features, if it isn't comfortable, it sucks.

I don't stick to one brand because fit varies from pack to pack.

Very true, packs are a lot like boots, that being said, a great pair of leather hiking boots usually requires a break-in period before they begin to feel like part of your body, likewise with packs in my experience. My large MEC pack was not the most comfortable when I first bought it, it was OK, but after carrying it with a heavy load, the aluminium stays began to take the shape of my back and now I couldn't ask for a better fit nor a more comfortable pack. I guess this probably isn't the case with newer packs that use plastic internal frames/stays that don't form or change to the shape of your back, a better fit in the beginning is probably a lot more critical.

I haven't heard much about Mountainsmith lately. I know at one time they were considered about the best. I guess they changed ownership a few years ago and the original owner founded Kifaru. I've not heard much about them since then. Has anyone used a Mountainsmith pack lately? if so what was your impression?

I have said it once, I will say it again: Osprey is the way to go. If your looking for a large pack, I suggest the Osprey Atmos 65 model. It have three sizes depending on your height, its around 4000 cc. It has a mesh panel that sits against your back to keep you cool and has a lot of neat pockets.
