Backpack?

I scanned through the first few pages of the forum but I can't find a topic like this. I need a new backpack for an upcoming trip (two weeks of third-world-country hostels, 2nd class train/bus travel and lots of urban public transportation) but I also want it to do double duty for short (overnight, weekend) hiking/camping, as well as helping lug groceries from the store.

I'm on a budget but I'd rather spend the money than end up with something inadequate and/or flimsy.

What would you suggest?

i've been happy with Kelty over the years.

go to REI and take a look at their offerings from various mfg. if its on REI, it should be OK gear. also check out Amazon for their user reviews on various packs. users are the best source for reviews.

Maxpedition is pretty good. The things I don't like about the Maxpedition are solved with the Kirafu, but I am not sure it is worth the extra $$$. Depends on the person I guess.

Kelty +1
Maxpedition +1

little more$$$-- Badlands ---best warrenty/customer service I've ever had from a pack company, and an awesome pack to boot  Needed a hip belt extender. Called the company and had one custom made, for free, and sent within the week. They can customize your pack as well, from what I've read on their forum.

LLbean makes a good valued pack called the Bigelow, and a waterproof hunter's version as well. Although it is more of a weekender pack, it consistently wins awards for best value:
Come in top or panel load for $69:

Hunter's version with fanny pack - $119:

For about $140, I use a Golite Quest (4400 cu in) that is larger, but lighter:

I'm also looking at their Jam2 as a day/overnighter -it is only 1 pound, but their are comfort and load trade-offs for being ultralight.

Golite sale at campmor. The Pinnacle is a bigger ultralight, but well reviewed - and at $114, it's a steal - my wife has one and loves it, but only good to about 30 lbs.

North Face Terra's are also a good value and decently reviewed- 0n sale you can find them for $140-150:

I Like Kelty and have had good luck with Mountainsmith.

I Like My camelpak BFM it may be small for what you are looking for.

Try looking at Osprey packs. They are a little bit expenxive but are sure to satisfy most people.

Something between 2700 and 3000 cu in

Mountainsmith I have used traveling over the past 12 years or so.
Recently got a Dana, haven't used it that much yet but it is a great pack.

They are still going strong
