Backpackers and Trekkers: What do you bring along?

For day hiking, a Mora HD Companion and LM Wave. I always have a fixed blade even on a day hike. To save weight, it is usually a Mora HD.

For most other situations, my general camping knife is usually an ESEE 4 with Mora HD (backup/food prep).

Backwoods I normally carry a Buck 119 with a horizontal carry sheath, It is heavy though. For hikes in large urban parks I carry a Randall Gambler, or a Kershaw leak.

When I started getting into the lightweight mindset, I began a whole new search for a different lightweight dedicated backpacking knife , compatible with the new lightweight gear today. Starting out with a 5-layer Victorinox Ranger, then switched to a ESEE Izula, then toward a White River M1 Backpacker Pro, then finally settled on a Victorinox Sentinel one-hand single blade. Right now, I think the Sentinel is substantial enough for my world of lightweight backpacking, and inexpensive enough that loss or damage, wouldn't be so debilitating to my wallet. I'm trying to keep my knife 3oz or under.

It's funny, when I was a kid we used to go on week-long backpacking trips with nothing more than a SAK and a wire saw and were completely fine.
