Backpacking backpacks

I use an Arc'Teryx Axios 50 and can carry ~30 lbs and still be very comfortable.
Love that pack. Tried one on about a month ago. I think the big "if" is IF it fits your torso size, because the shoulder strap is fixed to the pack body as I recall(and probably one reason it's $180 less than the Altra). It fit me perfectly, though, and looks more like 60L than 50.
The lid pockets and kangaroo pocket were great, and accessing the water bottle pockets with the pack on easier than any other pack I can remember. Very nice, and I was really impressed with the comfort and features, especially for $199.

Take a good hard look at Deuter's offerings. My wife and I both have one of there packs after purchasing and bringing back several others. They make great packs for a really reasonable price. For the price you pay, you will get as much if not more than you will from some of the more expensive($400) packs.

As others have said, make sure you get fitted, and carry the pack with your intended load weight, because what may be comfortable for me may be a torture device for you, and vice verse.

Certainly not an Ultra light pack, but for the average backpacker that is carrying more than 20lbs. I would recommend them.

Regardless of the brand or model of pack you buy, make sure it fits YOU well, and is designed to carry as much weight as you intend to put in it. Far better to carry 20#s in a pack designed for 30#s than to attempt 30#s in a pack designed for 20#s.

Oftentimes, once you find a brand that fits you well, many of their models will work for you.
