For years my backpacking blades were an old sog Northern Ranger on a packstrap, a spyderco delica in my pocket and a sak in the kitchen bag. Along with a gerber saw.

Now I would take my ESEE-4 or 6 or my 5.25in fixed from Bruce Culberson, spyderco military, sak and my slide saw.

I have always brought a hatchet if I was more than 3 days out here in the Wet Coast.

my old one was a ancient swede with a 14in handle, found it when I was 20 buried 2ft deep in gravel landscaping, 15 years of use but it needs rehandling now.

My new backpack axe the past 4-5 years has been my 19in wetterlings, love that axe.

The old ranger is now my wife's EDC when we are at our property in the Caribou.

After having to stand down an aggressive stray Husky when I was out fishing and the fresh bear sign on our road she has finally taken to carrying a knife full time.
Not to mention the neighbour across the road saw a 140 to 170lb large male cougar on our bluff a month ago.

ESEE RC-4

Izula

SOG multitool

SAK

maybe an ontario machette if needed oh and small gerber ax if needed

I am going up to VA to hike some on the AT next week.

Right now, I am taking a folding Sierra Saw, my new S30V knife, my Spyderco Bushcraft knife, the Leatherman and a pocket knife of some kind, either a RAT-1 or the one handed SAK Trekker. Or both. :o

SAK "hiker" and rotate between either a TOPS Mohawk hunter, Pasayten or Entrek Javalina. Sometimes add a CS Panga machete. Just got a Condor Bushlore today but will just be playin with it in the backyard, at least til I reprofile blade grind(kinda like a hatchet edge outta box)

Me too.:D

Just got back from a week up in the San Juan's in Colorado. Took a FFG Delica only, was perfect. Don't like to carry alot of extra stuff, that's probably all I'll take from here on out.

If I was taking a fix blade, there's a variety to choose from in the 3" blade, 6.5-7" OAL length range: An ML custom, BHK Long Trail, Gossman UNK Jr would probably top the list. A Mora 510 is really all you need too, IMO.

It changes. Last time out... Vic Outdoorsman, Busse Game Warden (the .14" thick version), 10" Fiskars sliding saw.

I didn't even need the saw. Just broke firewood between two standing trees, and for the most part, fed the long branches into the fire.

Glad I had the Vic SAK though. Needed those tweezers for a tick removal.

CS khukri strapped on pack
Emerson Commander in pocket.
These two knives will allow me to do most of the camp chores I need. However if camping with a car near to the site I also have a small hatchet in the trunk. Recently I have picked up an ESEE Izula & 3 & I am looking at putting them into use.

Lately it has been My BHK Pathfinder, small Sawvivor and either a folder or a BHK First frontier patch knife. Usually also have a more clipper tucked in the pack somewhere as an extra. Before i got the Sawvivor and Pathfinder I carried a BHK Bushcrafter a Browning Crowell/Barker Comp cutter, but the Browning is pretty big for backpacking. I usually also have a Gerber Clutch stached in my pack.

Leatherman Charge Ti
Custom made 4" 01 drop point by Moose
Bacho lapplander saw (but in orange, not the famed olive drap :( )

ESEE-3 and SAK Farmer for most backpacking. I do a lot in the mountains and above treeline. Very comfortable using the 3 as a primary blade, very capable knife and it's still light enough that I don't feel bad carrying it while going over 12K ft passes and ridges. When we drop back below treeline it's plenty of knife for what I usually do there, which might be some fire prep, some fishing, but mostly food prep (trout and PB&J tortillas).

If we do shorter trips below treeline I usually include my Breeden hatchet along as when we hike in forested areas we usually don't go as far and spend more time at camp and around campfires. It's also handy for doing some carving in spare time as well.

Depends on the season/weather, but usually a 4-6" heavy-duty fixed blade and a SAK, or a 3-4" fixed blade, SAK and folding saw or hatchet.

If I'm hunting, I'll substitute a Leatherman Wave for the SAK so I'll have a few extra tools for the rifle or bow if necessary.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I sometimes cover ground, but distance isn't all that large, but often do as RR says.

Favorite Combos:

Brian Andrews Bushcrafter + Victorinox RuckSak
Bruce Culberson EDC + Wildertool S-Curve + Vic. RuckSak
ESEE-3/6 + Vic RuckSak or substitute with Farmer or Camper SAK models

New Brian Andrews Bitterroot - can Substitute Culberson EDC or potentially substitute the Bushcrafter in combo #1 for my lightest combo.
Bryan Breeden Cub can substitute for Culberson EDC or RC-3
