Backpacking companion

I attached a Mora Black, a Robust also great choice if you don't need the coating/protection.

I hike the Smoky Mts including part of the Appalachian Trail inside the GSM National Park. I've stayed in the cabins on Mt LeConte.

Benchmade 530.

3.25 inch blade at 1.88 oz

SAK would be the preferred route for hiking or camping for me. I own a huntsman II so that is what I bring, if I didn't a Vic Camper/Hiker would be the next choice.

This is as light as it gets. This is a Victorinox Paring Knife with a Kydex sheath and a lanyard hole in the handle. I use gutted para cord to make a neck knife you won't even be able to feel. I believe they make them with 3.25" & 4" blades.

A decent length blade and that awesome Victorinox steel. I glued an ez-lap diamond home to the sheathand added a mini Bic holder to the neck cord.

If that is not sturdy enough for you I'd recommend the Mora 511.

I just suck up the extra weight and carry my Ontario Afghan (now replaced by a Becker BK2) so that I can do it all. Then I usually also carry a Leatherman Skeletool.

You really have to add some info. Do you want:
Fixed blade or folder?
Do you ultralight backpack and how concerned are you with the weight of the knife?
Do you want the knife for general stuff or are you going to bushcraft?
Do you anticipate to skin game or fillet fish?
Will this be the only tool you bring or will you have other tools, knives, axes etc?
Do you have a price range in mind?

The more information you give the better direction we can give. For example if you are only going to use the knife to open food packages and maybe a little whittling then a SAK is fine. Light weight easily packable and decent quality. However if you plan on fishing for your dinner some nights and need a knife to fillet fish then a SAK is probably not what you need.
