Backpacking folder?

I have an HI Kukri, a multi-tool and a small pocket folder: a kershaw leek or something like that for little stuff and food prep. But that may change as I have a bk4 and esee 4 on the way.

This is my backpacking setup - 3.5" light but though fixed blade, a modded SAK (scissors & saw). Everything I need in a compact but sturdy package...no more, no less :D

Rogue,

I don't like to carry a belt knife when i have my Golite pack on. So I like to carry a decent sized folder in my front pocket and use it for light camp slicing tasks, including food prep. Given my requirements, I searched a while and finally settled on a Buck Vantage in swedish steel, primarily because it was cheap at $30 bucks, solid lock, decent stainless steel, one-hand opening/closing, and most importantly for food prep, an open frame for easy cleaning and rinsing:

It's a pot-lifter !!!!!!!

I am a technical writer by proffesion
So any way I choose to write it is right lol
It also could be potlifter

The convention is:
When you have a list like "Pick up the blue aluminum pot-holder", the eye scans the single hypenated word better
But it is short like "Pick up the pot holder", eye scans the two works better

I am not really a backpacker but I do take my dogs on off trail woods walks several times a week . It's like going to church for me . I always have a Swiss Army Knife on me . Always . I favor the cellidor models as I like having tweezers and scissors . The woodsaw and awl are also nice to have .
For along time I carried a large trapper pattern slip-joint along with the sak . Trappers are a very useful and capable pattern imho . However the Spyderco Endure ffg that I traded for a while back has really taken over as my edc combo folder . It's a very well designed , well thought out folder . I don't know why everybody would not want one . Your mileage may vary .

On multiday hiking trips I typically prefer carrying a SAK, an Opinel #8 and a fixed blade. The SAK is used for a lot of light and medium duty tasks, the fixed blade is for heavier duty tasks and the Opinel is for food preparation only. This system works great for my style of hiking/camping.

Personally, I'd take a large fixed blade and a Spyderco Endura 4. The VG-10 is very rust resistant and the knife is very lightweight.

Same here.

I love my Military, and other higher end knives, but the stout blade on the Endura 4, combined with the light weight for its length gives it the nod. If it wasn't an Endura, it would be a Delica...

Victorianox OHT. Not only does it have a nice blade (takes a bit to get used to), but it also has a saw and a few other useful tools (as do most SAKs).

So, if I understand correctly, you will carry a hatchet, Becker BK 16, saw, and multitool and you want to know what fifth tool to carry in an area where you cannot gather wood.

I'd say ditch the hatchet and saw and fill the gap between the Becker and the multitool with the Spyderco or some such.

That was just a preliminary packing list. I don't know about you guys but when planning my load out I start big and whittle it down. It was also my load out before I looked into if wood harvesting is allowed in Big Sur, which it is not. So I am definitely ditching the folding saw, I MIGHT keep a hatchet but a very small one, and the multitool is a non-issue for me. It is very small and slips into the pack.

I should add, I am personally working on my bushcraft skils (definitely a novice) and I like to bring extra cutlery just to try out different techniques and try to teach myself different things with different tools. Obviously I don't want to break my back over it and bring way too much, but I am a big guy so I can handle it and it is not a three week trip or anything. The folder will mostly be for food prep, everything else will be for everything else.

Yeah, I think most of us have cutlery we NEED and the rest is cutlery we WANT. I for one have 0 need for a medium sized fixed blade but I carry one because I enjoy it. Some hikers carry cameras, ipods, journals, or books for entertainment. We carry knives. :D

I always bring way too many knives, so I have at least 2 folders on me at all times. Flavor of the month is Ontario RAT-1.
