Backpacking/Hiking/"Survival" long gun...
Well, two different categories, IMO.

For Backpacking/Hiking, weight is more of an issue and using the gun is less of a priority.
The Marlin 983T would be my choice. I prefer the .22 Mag over the LR.

For surviving/hunting, I prefer a centerfire.

I would think that the SU-16 would be an awesome survival rifle and has enough poop to take down larger game if needed. Waiting to get my hands on one as I type this. Once I've done some roaming with it, I can get a better idea though.

Have you heard of the marlin papoose? Semi auto mag fed, and best of all the barrel comes off for backpacking, 3 1/4 pounds. I bought one recently, amazing little rifle.

+1

The papoose is a great rifle, and will be better in the elements with the stainless finish and synthetic stock.

Other rifles that I like for woods romping are the marlin 336, marlin 1895 guide gun, and a springfield socom or its bigger brother the M1A1.

My hesitation regarding the Papoose is that I have had bad experience with mag fed rimfires.

Longbow, have you seen the other offering from Kel Tec, the Sub 2000? If you can live with .40 cal handgun ammunition, the rifle is 4.0 lbs. unloaded and 16" closed!
