Backpacking tent under $200?

I figured asking for some opinions here could not hurt.

I'm in need of a backpacking tent. Under $200 preferably.
I'll be in the only one staying in it, so 1-2 person in size is fine.

No need for something that is made for extreme winter conditions. I'm in Texas, it's never really that cold here. I'm still wearing flip flops and shorts now, and I never go anywhere where with extreme winter conditions. Unless I am snow skiing.

Enough room to be able to chance clothes would be nice, although I'm not expecting to be able to stand up in a small tent. Sit up, play cards, and small tasks such as those.

Good ventalation is always a plus. Waking up damp is never much fun.

Share your tent wisdom with me. :o

im not sure if they sell them in the usa, they must im sure,
eureka.com
get the spitfire, just a one person tent but its plenty of room for me,
ive had it several years and taken it on multi day backpacking trips its great.
i think around 120 i got it for,
it has a nice celing height so you can sit up in it and not bump your head (im 5'11)

Yes the Spitfire 2 is a tent that I have been looking at, and it seems the reviews on it are favorable as well. Thanks for the input.

I would go with a eureka as well, best tent for the money. I use slightly smaller tents, and eurekas seem to last a long time. Not sure if they still make the "Autumn wind" but That might fit your needs. It is free standing as well.

Kelty Teton 2 or Grand Mesa 2 would be a very good option. Lots of room for the weight, I have a Teton 2 that sees use backpacking and car camping.

Eureka is a bit heavy for packing - good tent but not super light. I've had my eye on the GoLite ones or I did have before I discovered hammock camping. In that light, may I recommend a hammock and tarp? They are light, comfie, and not the same old thing.

One of these days, I'll get a nicer tarp - mine isn't really backpacking friendly either.

I was an avid backpacker in NM for about 11 years. I used to lug around a 2-person tent, just for myself. Eventually, I got down to a bivy sack and a tarp. How much time and energy we spend carrying them, setting up and tearing down? How much time do you spend changing clothes, you can improvise when needed. The bivy is so light, the tarp is sometimes optional in the west.
Get something small and as light as possible. More room in your pack, less weight.

Eureka. I have had my tent stay dry in seriously unreasonable circumstances.

I just put an order in for one.

REI Half Dome 2 with a $26 discount taken off by a coupon that Google provided me with. :)

Much like the Gunnison as suggested by seionage. I have tried ultralight and bivy type setups in the past, but I am just not a fan of them. I like a little more options than some of those setups offer.

Thanks for the input everyone! A few of you suggested products I was already looking at which is good to know.

The MSR Hubba is very well-ventilated and extremely light. Dont know how much it costs in the US, but should be within your budget.

Google it and youll see 100's of rave reviews. Got the Hubba HP myself.

they are made in the usa! In johnson city new york!

One year I stayed 7days in the MSR Hubba, the next year I stayed in the Gunnison. I would take the gunnison any day over the MSR.

The Half Dome looks pretty good. Has decent reviews. I'm sure you will like it.

Good luck!

If you can spend a little more, get the REI Quarter Dome T2, it's a great little tent, lightweight and backed by a great warranty; also don't buy the footprint for it, just go to Home Depot and buy a tarp, you'll save about $20.

I have an older REI Half Dome and it is heavy but a great tent - very easy to setup. I believe the newer Half Dome 2 is lighter than the one I have. I think the Gunnison is a great tent as well.
