Backpacking through Europe.

I think a Leatherman Wave is the perfect traveling tool. Last year I traveled with my wife several months in Europe (mostly southern) and several months in SE Asia and I never got hassled over my Leatherman. I used the tool daily. I find that pliers are necessary for fixing and maintaining traveling gear. We also ended up adopting an old Peugot 505 station wagon for awhile. The leatherman came in handy for keeping that old wreck going. The only time someone acknowledged the tool was during a bus search in Malaysia when an officer pointed to the leatherman pouch. I carefully removed the leatherman and extended the pliers. He nodded and moved on.

I think there is no problem for carrying a Leatherman multi-tool in France. The difficulty with the French law is to determine if the knife is a tool or a weapon... with this kind of item, nobody can make a mistake ! ;)

Knife laws in Europe vary greatly. While you have to be careful in England and Denmark, it is no problem to carry a large folder in many countries like Germany, France, Spain etc.
A SAK, even a big locking one, or any multitool should not be a problem anywhere.
Obviously, if you behave in a decent way and don't look like trouble noone will be interested anyway. And even if they are and something is amiss, they will probably ask you to take the knife/tool back to your hotel and leave it there. Confiscation is unlikely, let alone any further kind of legal hassle.
I would recommend a large SAK (the 3.5" Victorinox or 4" Wenger) because that extra bit of blade length comes in very handy when cutting bread or large chunks of cheese and he *must* have a corkscrew... :D

And if he comes to France, he could buy a large Laguiole with corkscrew there - they can be true beauties and are excessively useful while not looking at all "tactical".

May he enjoy his travel and find us Europeans very civilised and friendly. :)
