Well, I finally got out on my first trip since I broke my hip, and boy did I underestimate how much physical fitness I lost after sitting on my arse for 2 months! The hip held up fine though, at least it wasn't any worse than my other hip and the rest of my body... But OMG was the rest of my body hurting! And man, I have lost a lot of lung capacity too. Gotta get back on the bike, and start going on more local hikes during the week.
Anyways, the wife and I headed up to lower young lake (9,900ft.) in Yosemite this weekend. Highest point along trail was 10,040ft. We invited the usual suspects, but none of them could make it, but it was kind of nice just the two of us.
We crossed paths with some nice people. One guy in particular was interested in my hiking staff, and we exchanged tips on making them. He puts an eye bolt in the bottom of his, cuts off the eye, then sharpens it. I've been wanting to do something like this, especially for when I'm hiking over granite, but didn't really know how to go about it. I showed him the copper pipe end cap that I put on the bottom, and it was like a light went off in his head. He really liked that idea, as he was having problems with the bottom of his mushrooming.
I also managed to a little elevation sickness I think, when we got to the lake. It's never happened to me before, but I felt like crap when we got to our spot and dropped our packs. I felt fine up to that point, then I had to take a half hour to rest, take some motrin, then eat some dinner and I felt a lot better.
After that I got to go do some fishing! First cast, and I hook up with a nice little brook trout! A good sign that the fishing is gonna be good... Or not, that was the only fish I caught. I had two bites on a fly but missed those. Oh well, at least I didn't get skunked. Sorry for the crappy pic, but I thought I'd have more opportunities to get a nice pic and didn't want to stress the guy any more than I had to. Oh well, next time I'll know to get a good shot of the first fish, 'cause it just may be my last.
All in all, a pretty good trip, I had fun, even if I wasn't feeling that well, and am really out of shape. I was disappointed we didn't see any bears though. I thought for sure we'd at least see one, or hear one at night, with all the fuss they make about them in Yosemite...
Gear: I gotta say, I absolutely LOVE my deuter backpack! OMG, even though I was to pooped to poop, my pack was as comfortable as can be. It didn't feel like I was lugging around 37lbs. on my back, it felt more like I weighed an extra 37lbs. My wife has the women's version and she feels the same way about hers. I couldn't ask for a more comfortable pack, and for a really good price compared to the competition at $175. It weighs 4lbs. but it makes a 35lb. load FEEL a lot lighter than all of the 3lb. packs I've tried.
I took a knife I made from scratch this time, since I don't have many pics of it, and it doesn't get much love. I made it for my wife, but she doesn't really put it to use, so I started carrying it around lately. The re-handled mora came along as well, but it was strapped to my wife's pack instead of my belt this time.
Ok, enough talking, here's some pics:
