I was smiling at the reference to X-C ski poles. For years before I bought the Komperdells, I used a set of 1972 bamboo X-C ski poles that I got from EMS in Boston for probably $10 or less (new). People looked at me a little funny, but they worked fine. I met a woman in her 70's on a trail once and she got her ski poles for $2 (for the pair) from a local thrift shop! Beat my deal.
Things I like better about the Komperdells are the ability to collapse them for transport/storage, the ergonomic cork grips, and the 8 degree forward cant. However, you can certainly get by OK with X-C ski poles.
Only once did I have a slip in the section locks on the Komperdells. I lost footing and pulled down on one pole with much of my very substantial weight. It shortened by a couple inches, but held my weight. I quickly re-adjusted it. I have caught myself several other times without a joint slip.
