Backpacks

go with cordura, in that environment its your best bet....and get a good pack, that trip sounds nice and definately not a time to buy from a discount surplus place

I would suggest a hydration pack. Storage for the gear you'll need, and the H2O wil come in handy.

Also thinking about later usage, you'll be apt to use the hydradation pack for day walks/hikes or even around a campus environment.

Your going to need (probably) a couple liters of water for a 6 hour hike in the tropics, considering heat and humidity. You can carry water bottles in your pack, a canteen as an additional piece of gear, or, the bladder system in a hydration pack.

In a lush environment it's also nice to have everything on your back (behind you). Anything hanging to the side is subject to get snagged easier.
Consider this as you ponder shoulder bags and such.

I ordered the REI bag that I linked earlier, but I decided to wait until I got it to big up a hydration reservoir. They cost the same on REI that they do in EMS, so I'll just get one in the mall. Thanks for the help everyone.

Check out www.maxpedition.com there stuff is top of the line in quality as far as I am concerned. I have used Blackhawk and a few other military grades and this is the best. It has some great design features as well. Alittle spendy but well worth it if you want some equipment that will last..

Not a bad pack, but I wonder about foreign travel with a military pack. Low key is good.

I always opt for clothing and equipemnt that are not in camo for this very reason. Camouflage can sometime be seen as aggressive and may attract unnecessary and unwanted attention. I use plain olive drab packs and such though, since I hate standing out for miles like so many hikers and climebrs do with their bright red, purple and orange gear.

Yes, I agree with you Nord, but if you find a pack you really like and is durable then that is what to use. I personally would feel abit goofy if I was running around like a damn green beret on a mission hiking and came across some other campers. It would probably freak someone out. On the other hand, I would probably also use a different pack to travel with. Yes, and today I would not want to be seen as a military figure in any way on vacation.

I personally like the military and I like camouflage, or at least good camouflages, but as you say it can freak some people out and it is better if you look like a civilian outdoors person or hunter than some guerilla warfare militia nutjob. And even if you are a nutjob or up to no good in general it might still be wise to not be seen as one and to blend in with more normal people.:D

I use some military gear and packs, but plain dark olive green stuff mostly and I always try to mix in some garment of other colour to break up the military look, like dark brown or grey pants or something. Of course you should use the best packs available, and if they happen to be camo then so be it. I personally think it is a plus if they are in plain subdued colours like olive green and would never buy a bright red or blue backpack.

I think camo is much more widely accepted and used in the US than in some other countries too, over here you will get funny looks if you walk around in camo from head to toe. If you plan to travel in third world countries camo and an overly military style look can be a very bad idea. I have read of at least one incident where a group of travellers where mistakenly shot dead since they were thought to be mercenaries rather than tourists.
