Came home from Church today & the rain stopped & the sky cleared up so the twins & me went to the back yard to shoot our bows & then I decided to give a try at making my first "Hobo Stove" :D here are a few pics -
I used my SAR-5 by Mark Wohlwend to process the wood for the fire, I love this knife

I see alot of people make their stoves & use a coat hanger thru the top to hold the pot or skillet but I turned it over & built the fire on the ground & used the top like a burner on a stove...It worked ! While we were playing, we had a visit from an interesting "Mother"

I think it's a Wolf spider but I'm no bug expert...where is JoeZilla ? Somebody wanna ID this female with her egg sack ? I stuck the tip of my arrow in front of her to get her to stop for a pic & she instantly raised up & stuck her Large Black fangs out & bite the tip of the arrow 3 tims with lightning speed, she hit it hard, you coud hear her fangs smack the steel tip ! I'de say she would inflect some pain on a man !

That Sar5 is a good looking knife! Good idea on the twig stove.

Thanks guy's ! I love the knife & yes it was a "Big" spider w/ big fangs ! The stove is gonna be going with me on my fishing trips !

Great stuff buddy, gonna have to make me a hobo stove now !

I'd die if that spider got close to me, snakes and stuff I love but spiders creep me out !!!

Hey that SAR 5 will be a collectors knife now Mark isn't taking any more orders !

Same here on the spider's 'Ol Bud...I hate'em but I didn't kill her, I relocated her out of the way. I've got one knife on order from Mark right now...I'm gonna miss his blades ! He makes a great knife !

You scared me with the spider, seeing as I just killed a decent sized one that was under my desk

Coaldigger,

I lived in Kentucky for three years and never saw a spider like that!!!

Can you tell us more about the SAR-5? Steel, length, etc? Great pics! Thanks!

CoalDigger,

That is a great "Hobo Stove". Looks like a lot of fun to make, and more fun to use:thumbup:

I'm not too excited to see that huge spider.....cause I just bought a house in Kentucky last August. I'm just hoping they don't reside in the Greenup/Boyd county area...:D

Thanks for sharing the pictures!!

Very nice photos.

I would call that a wolf spider...not sure if that is accurate, but that is what we call those around here...

That stove looks nice too. I love recycling stuff like that, great idea!

Thats a young Tarantula , it will molt this summer as it grows, and get pretty big. Great pics Bro.

I asked a well know BF member who has some expertise in these guys
he replied back that its a
Burrowing Wolf Spider

I googlized that and see pictures that look very similar
to yours,however,after reading,it appears
that wolf spiders have the egg sack attached to their abdomen so
they can still hunt. Yours seems to be carrying it in its fangs.
Maybe thats a difference between burrowing and a regular wolf spider.

cool spider

Pilot1...The SAR-5 is full tang 3/16" 1095steel by Mark Wohlwend(the Master of 1095) 5.5" blade w/green micarta handle & yellow G10 spacers. The handle has a glass or whatever breaker (exposed corner of the tang) w/ lanyard hole. The sheath is DigiCamo kydex . This is one awsome knife !

Thanks for the info on the spider...yes she used her fangs to pack the sack & I know I've seen the regular wolf spider have the sack attached to her bottom.

Great photos. The SAR looks like a good, hard use piece. I absolutely love spiders - always have. I will kill every insect in my home except for crickets and spiders, much to my wife's consternation. This, despite having been bitten by them.

Thanks...the SAR-5 has been my most used blade since I've had it, it rides in my truck where ever I go & when I hit the hills it's on my belt ! It feels like a very solid/tough knife & shaving sharp ! I can't stand spiders but I respect them, aslong as they are not inside my home I leave them alone.
