There are several nice hikes down to the Rio Grande from the Pajarito Plateau within a few miles of home. This one is called the Blue Dot Trail because it is marked with blue dots from a can of spray paint.

The descent to the Rio is about 800 ft.

Dingus, my ridgeback, leads the way on the trail:

He likes to climb up on rocks above the trail to survey his domain:

Here's a shot looking downriver before climbing back out of the canyon:

These canyon hikes are a good way to begin getting back in shape after a long snowy winter. After the melt I go the other direction and head up into the Jemez Mtns. above Los Alamos. But that's another story.

Thats a good looking dog and great scenery to boot! Thanks for the shots.

Great pics of some real nice scenery bro, totally different to my hiking area's !

My wife has always been a big fan of Ridgebacks and the more I see of them the more I like them as well, do they make good hiking companions ?

Affirmative on Ridgebacks. This one's the best trail dog I've had. He's been trained since puppyhood to keep track me on the trail. If he gets out of sight I hide from him and he always finds me within 30 sec.

Nice I always liked your scenery for hiking.

Thanks bear. The cool deal on Los Alamos is the elevation changes that occur within a short distance. The town site is at 7,500 ft, and the Blue Dot trail head is at 6400. The descent to the Rio Grande takes you down to 5600 ft.

If you head into the mountains instead you can climb to the peak of Pajarito Mountain, our local ski hill, which rises to 10,441 ft. So, with the elevation ranging from 5,600 ft to 10,441 ft, several distinct life zones are accessible within the county. This is paradise for a hiker.

That makes for a great place to training for long hikes. I have been at that altitude a few times.

That sure is no country for old men.

great pics HDW... i love the desert... both of my folks hail from those regions...
